That's so funny that you should mention this because my dog is the same way. He will lick my face if I'm crying or if I'm laughing. I think he sense's the changes in my mood. I'm sure your dog is like your best friend. I've got a Min Pin/Jack Russell and he's my best friend. Is always here when I need him, is always happy to see me and doesn't talk back. His name is Cujo and he's adorable.
Here's a link to see him.

Some dogs do respond to their owners very well. I once had a dog (actually, it was a family dog) who would do the same thing. They will respond to joy, anger, and sadness.
However, dogs can also be trained to do this. And perhaps you inadvertently did this to your dog. That is, one time when you were sad and shed some tears, he licked your face (just for the salt). You rewarded him with hugs and kisses. So the next time he saw you do this, he licked again and you hugged again. Hence you "taught" him that licking your face when you make a certain sound (in this case, crying) will generate a reward for him (hugs, praise and kisses).
Still, dogs do sense our emotions and do respond accordingly, so he does care some. I hope you don't cry a lot, but the next time you do and your dog licks your face, give him an extra hug from me. :-)

He does care. Dog's have a sort of sense that they know you're making some sort of funny noise when you cry or they just know that something's not right with what you're doing. My dog's do the same thing, tilting their heads and wondering what in the world is wrong with me! But they really do make me feel better too.. =)

Actually yes, the dog is trying to calm you down. Dogs are excellent at reading body language. I can't swear in my house as the dogs (I have three) all jump in my lap and try to calm me down, geeze I was only swearing at the football game on TV.

He IS trying to comfort you. I lost two friends in the past two years and both times when I got the news, my dogs gathered around me and would not leave my side. They licked me and stayed by me.

Awwwww, thats cute. Your dog sounds really sweet. I just got a puppy 2 months ago, she is my first dog. Coco(my pup) is nice and everything, but so hyper, all she does is play. Even when I'm upset with her, and I ignore her she will just play by herself. Who cares if I'm upset!

AwWwWw... My husband and I have two American Pit Bull Terriers. We have a 1 year old male, named Brooklyn and a 4 month old female, named Destiny. Anytime I cry Brooklyn will run up to me and start licking my face, then he will either lay down on me or right next to me untill I stop crying! lol.. He looks at me like he knows that I am sad and he wants to make me feel better, which he always does! He also get really protective of me sometimes. For example.. if my husband gets mad about something and starts yelling, even if he isnt yelling at me, if he gets close to me while he is yelling Brooklyn will stand infront of me and bark at him.. lol! He wouldnt attack my husband or anyone for that matter (unless that person attacked me) and as soon as my husband stops yelling Brooklyn will calm down but, Brooklyn doesnt really like anyone getting loud around me! lol!... Destiny doesnt really do that but, shes still a puppy and all she wants to do is eat, play and sleep! lol! But, I know what you are talking about! It is sooo cute when dogs do that! It makes you feel like they understand and they care... I have always heard that dogs sense when you are scared, happy or sad. I dont really know if thats true but, it really seems like Brooklyn knows! lol! : )
These are our babies! We love them to death and would do anything for them! : )
