I could not find a phobia name, but I will tell you their are some out their that are obsessive about chewing. My son is 10 and if anyone gets near him with gum he freaks. He covers his ears and leaves the room. He can't stand to hear anyone chew. Mouth closed or not.

It is very rude to chew with your mouth open. A lot of people do not realize that. Some of us just try to deal with hearing the chewing, while others go crazy (like my son).

As you've probablly noticed there are many people who have what I call an "acute sensitivity to noise".

I too, am one of those people. I am especially sensitive to the sound of someone eating things that make a loud crunch, such as someone chewing a sour dough pretzel or biting off a piece of carrot, but it also includes small sounds such as the gritty sound of chewing the remains of their little strawberry seeds. Petty you say? Not to us!

People who do not have this sensitivity have no idea why it bothers you, so don't even bother explaining. They don't "have it", so they don't "get it". But I hope it helps to know that you are in good company.

This is not a phobia you are obviously well mannered and can't stand bad manners. Most people with bad manners are completely oblivious to the fact because no on ever tells them so.

I hate that too. My guess is that it ought to be called masticaphobia, derived from masticate, to chew or eat. I bet the Monty Python team would have done a skit where someone on the metro was asked to desist from masticating, if they'd been around in this decade! Over the tannoy, for maximum embarrassment value!

There probably is a phobia, but you can wikipedia that yourself.

The rule is, you cannot expect culture from the uncultured. That is, is you are in Sal's diner, at lunch, next to a construction site, you can expect to hear some burps and farts.

Not everybody was brought up with 'manners.'

I'm not sure if there is a name for that, but whatever it is...I've got it! There is nothing more repulsive than to hear people chew...makes me want to strangle them! Everyone in America should be made to take an etiquette class!

Freeeekin A, I agree with you....my mom chomps when she chews sometimes and it makes me wanna stab myself in the eye with my knife....I also can't stand eating in a restaurant or something where I can hear other ppl chomping and chewing their food - I'd rather be in a noisy joint
