Opel is owned by GM and they don't seem interested in re-introducing the brand in North America. GM has already been long criticized for having too many overlapping brands, and they spent a pretty penny shutting down Oldsmobile a few years ago (they spent something like a billion dollars compensating Oldsmobile dealers), and I would imagine introducing a "new" car brand to market would be even more expensive. Besides, GM has sold Opels in the US recently, they just don't call them Opels (Cadillac Catera and the upcoming Saturn Astra are/were essentially re-badged Opels).

Renault pulled out of the North American market in the late 80s and I'm guessing they just don't think it's worthwhile. Re-establishing a brand name in the US and a dealer network is a very expensive and risky proposition.

Renaults (mainly the Alliance compact model ) were sold in the U.S. until the late ‘80s, but distribution ended mainly due to weak sales. (In 1979, the French automaker had formed a partnership with American Motors Corp. (AMC), which eventually ended when Chrysler bought AMC.) The French brand could return to the U.S. market after 2010 with a new model geared especially for U.S. buyers, according to some news reports. Renault, which now has a partnership with Japanese automaker Nissan may co-develop platforms, gearboxes and engines for new models.

Opels have been sold on and off in the U.S. for many years. The German Adam Opel automaker is owned by General Motors. Some of GM's past models, such as the Cadillac Catera, have been based on Opel designs. Later this year, GM’s Saturn brand will add the Opel Astra compact hatchback model to its lineup. The Saturn Astra will be built at GM’s plant in Antwerp, Belgium. Astra is part of GM's plan for Opel and Saturn brands to share more products in the future. Other examples of collaboration between GM’s Opel and Saturn brands include the Saturn Sky, the Opel GT, the Opel Antara and 2008 Saturn Vue. There’s also the possibility that the next-generation midsize Opel Vectra will follow in 2009.
