I think there is a legal minimum age now, I'm not sure what it is. It depends on who the kid is, for me. I started at 9. If there were anoddly responsable 9 yr old, and it wasn't for long... I might consider it.

I am not looking for an age but more the responsibility of the teen in question. I would look at grades, extra-curricular activities, responsibilities that they have held prior, prior babysitting jobs and of course the experience that my children had with them. What my kids tell me are very important and feedback from the sitter is important as well along with good communication skills. That's what I look for. However, I do let a certain 13 year old watch my children. But my minimum to baby sit is 14 just based on age alone.

I only let people I know babysit my kids. If it happened to be a pre-teen then I'd go right ahead. I baby-sat when I was that age after taking a Red Cross Babysitter's course which really helped me out with jobs.
I really believe if the babysitter is qualified then age is just a number. Heck, I would much rather a pre-teen watch them who knows the Heimlich maneuver, CPR, and what to do in case of emergency to watch my boys rather then an adult who hasn't a clue.
Best of Luck!

Well personally I've never had to hire a babysitter until recently. I have to hire someone to watch my two year old. I interviewed a few people young and old and personally I hired an older mom of 4 with experience also taking care of other children besides her own. I interviewed a 17 year old and I didn't feel like she was responsible enough because I caughter her lying to me several times. So personally I prefer someone older than 18.

I just read about this and I dont think there is any age minimun, I know Texas doesnt have an age requirement. Its up to the parent. You have to be sure the child is not afraid of being alone as well as their knowledge of what to do in emergencies , and maturity. If You feel that your child is capable of babysitting a child then it's up to you. As well as if you think your child will be behaved enough for a young person to watch after!

It depends on the age of the child. For my 1 year old, I usually don't hire anyone under the age of 17. If I just need some extra help, while I clean or work from home I'd hire a preteen.

someone with experience. At the youngest 14 but I prefer 16 not to young. So they don't get to stressed out. By the Law you have to be at least 14 years old. some states you have to take a first aid and C.P.R. class

well I personally would want someone around the age of 17 if we were going out... But if I needed someone to help watch the kids while I did house work or just for some r&r for awhile I would look for someone around the age of 12 to help out.....

Age 16 and she must have brothers and sisters or references. Babies younger than 1 year old should not be left with teenagers. Very few teenagers have experience with infants.
