From what I remember you have to drink something like 200 cans of diet coke a day for this to be harmful. They tested lab rats with sugar sweetners. Rats normally live 2 years. The scientists estimates how much sweetner the average human ingested in a day. Since the average life span of the human is late seventies they multiplied the amount of sweetner given to lab rats to simulate them taking the sweetner as a human being. This was something I heard yyears ago and I hope I explained it.

I would stay away from saccahrin, and aspartame. Saccarhin causes multiple problems and aspartame has a strong history of causing eye problems. Splenda is a No-Go also but I just can't remember the specific problems it was linked to (maybe it was memory?). Xyletol seems to be the newest one on the market. I do not know much about it but it does catch my notice that Vets specificall warn that dogs cannot have even the smallest amount because it causes liver and kidney damage. That alone makes me hesitant to try it. A couple of good natural alternatives I use are honey, blackstrap molasses, or stevia. Stevia is a natural plant with 10x the sweetness flavor of sugar but does not raise blood sugars the way sugars do.

Some aren't and some are. Splenda is okay to have once in awhile, but personally I think it's too sweet, but you should stay away from Aspartame because it is very bad for you.

I had a "nutrition bar" today that was made with a lot of sugar substitutes, and I've had gas all day =(

Anything that is not natural is harmful to you. Sugar substitues actually are absorbed into your body fat cells and they just "hang out". Your body does not digest it. That in turn is why it can cause cancer. Stay away from all sugar substitues and just monitor you natural sugar intake. Good Luck

I would stay away from Aspartame. It was tested on lab rats and ended up giving them brain tumors and even the FDA wouldn't approve it for the longest time...

It was that harmful to people they wouldn't be selling it.
