Here's what Forbes has to recommend:

I agree with Forbes, go with a Fusion!

Consumer Reports also highly recommends the Ford Focus for teens (2002 or newer, except 2 door models) & there is not much to argue with THEM . They DO get great gas mileage

Which of those do you want. How much is the kid going to drive, and are you going to make them pay for their gas. I'd go with something older, so you're only out a few thousand dollars if they total it, but certainly bigger, not small. Think old buick v.s. a corolla. They don't need a cool car, and if they don't have the coolest car, they're not going to be the one with 5 other teenagers in the car encouraging them to do something stupid. If they've got a 20 mile commute to school, then milage is something you've got to think about, but if it's only 10-20 miles a week, the milage isn't worht as much as having something bigger and safer. Minivans and station wagons, if you don't worry about wht they'll do with the seats down, are uncool, but generally very safe.

Chevy Cavilier. Cheap, not bad looking, and WHEREVER you ever go if there is a ton in the salvage yards to get parts from to make wreck repairs cheaper, more than you can say for any of the Japaneese cars. ( no I dont have anything against the Japaneese cars, thay all last forever and so there aren't any in the salvage yards!)

My sister drives a Hyundai Elantra, and my other sister's first car was a Honda Accord. Both good on mileage, but the elantra seems kinda "flimsy" if u know what i mean. As for me, im getting a 1996 Ford Explorer, great for wrecks, but not so good on gas.

Ford Contour.

Cheap - reliable.

And my brother hit a stopped snow plow truck (F250) at 60MPH and walked away unhurt.

I am not a real ford fan, but they are pretty decent cars.

Most small Japanese cars fit your description. Depends which one you like. Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic are just a couple.
