I received my 1st jury summons in the mail and I do not want to go. I am pregnant and it's far from my home. I called my doctor's office for a note and the nurse said they provide letters but that they are always denied. So if I can't get out of that how do you get out of jury duty then? Thoughts? Ideas?

You should really consider just telling the truth. Jury duty might not be the most fun you could have, but it is every citizens duty. People lives are involved in these trials. Both the accused and the victims need real justice. Put yourself in either of their positions and how you would feel if everyone lied their way out of jury duty. Most of the time you don't even end up on a case, at least where we live.

Check the box on the summons that says you were a convicted felon and your civil rights have not been restored.
Don't give them any other information.
The court jury system has no way of telling if a person was convicted of a felony older than 10 years. So they have no way to verify if you telling the truth or not.
I always add "I was wrongfully convicted in your court of a felony and would be prejudicial in making all my decisions in favor of the accused" Then in large letters I scribble in very angry looking writing "NOT GUILTY"
This excuse never lasts, they still will send another summons after a year or so, because they have no way of knowing if I had my civil rights restored.

I got out of jury duty by saying I thought the guy was guilty before even hearing the case. I didn't have jury duty. I did think the guy was guilty though.......

There is really no honest way to get out of jury duty unless you meet one of their criteria for excusal. This varies from county to county, but you may be excused from jury service if you have a newborn. You can also postpone your service in many areas. There should be a telephone number on your summons that you can call if you have any questions. But if you don't really have a valid excuse, please consider just doing it. Jury service is an inconvenience for us all, but it is each and every adult's civic duty. You are placing a greater burden on the rest of us if you try to get out of jury duty without a valid excuse.

Jury duty is one of those things that we ALL should do. In order to keep the judicial system that we have,it requires participation of all of us.Look at it as a chance to catch up on your reading or whatever.
