Each tribe,or sect,or denomination of religion claims that they alone have the only true handle on truth. It all comes back to how well they can sell their propaganda ,hook people in & recruit them--"there's a sucker born every day"

Well, we do need a variety of faiths because spiritual paths are not a one size fits all. These new religions came about to address the needs of those the existing religions aren't working for. BTW - you can't really throw witches and satanists in with the Heaven's Gate people. A genuine cult has a crazy leader at the helm who people worship and listen to. Satanists are so individualistic that they're not easily led into cults, and most witches are actually recreating dead/dying pagan religions. They tend to be solitary and independent, too. So they're not easily swept up into cults. That isn't saying there aren't cults out there working under the guise of Satanism or Witchcraft, but there are also cults working under the guise of Christianity.

For the same reason new sororities, fraternities and clubs pop up when there are already a million on campus. Some folks just don't feel like they fit into any particular group so they will create a new one and put a different spin on it to make them feel like they are special. Also, disagreements on the way you practice religions is the basis of many spawns of new religions.

Sometimes people go searching for answers and just don't fit in anywhere. These are frequently the folks who join cults. Others are hit with the sudden "realization" or "calling" to their chosen faith. Still others are intorduced to one of these faiths and something "clicks" with them.
Just like with mainstream religions.

What makes you think yours is the only option or opinion available to the rest of us free-thinkers. Maybe it would help if you knew more about them before you verbalize your warped sense of religious beliefs.. Where did God come from?? If yours is the true God wouldn't every religion call him/her by the same name?? Ever argue about something you knew nothing about??OH YEAH YOU ARE NOW!!!!!!

Variety is the spice of life!
Seriously, there are many many ways to think about things, and the variety of religions is just an expression of that. It's a good thing. In-box thinking is a major irritant with me.

Man seeks a god of his own creation. His nature is corrupt.
He constantly fashions new idols and imagines them to meet his needs and desires.
The "new gods" of today are not new at all, and the number of them has only increased as with the population of the earth.

Yes all religions are cults.
It doesn't matter what you need. Facts are facts and we are here and you may as well just relax. It's Friday!
