Which one is better?

I don't think either is "better". It depends on what you're looking for. They are very similar cars. They use the same engine and transmission and most likely share many other parts.

The Corolla gets slightly better MPG, but in the real world the difference is negligable. Consumer Reports measured the Corolla at 29mpg and the Matrix at 27mpg. Even at $3.50/gallon, someone driving 15,000 miles a year would only save $133/year (a whole $11/month).

The biggest difference between them is that the Corolla is a sedan while the Matrix is a hatchback/wagon. The Matrix is little bit shorter than the Corolla but actually has more leg room, and of course the hatch design means it has more cargo space as well. But not everyone needs the utility of a hatchback, and frankly I think the Matrix is rather ugly looking.

Take out both for a test drive. The only opinion that counts as to which is better is your own.

I'd say Corolla. I have driven Matrix, on my previous job as a sales rep, and i tell you Matrix is a very reliable car and everything but it just doesn's feel the way a Corolla feels, if you know what i mean. It's like it is more industrial kind of ....car

I would definitely get the Corolla because it gets better fuel mileage (gas here is up to $4 in San Francisco!)
