I certainly hope that's not the case. If so I have a lot of repenting to do.

Maybe, but that's not the point is it?
Mormons believe that although there's is the right church (what church doesn't), everyone still has a right believe what they want.
One thing that Mormons do believe is that their are some things that are not good for the body. For example, years before smoking was found to be bad and cause cancer, Mormons said don't smoke. Even back when smoking was very popular. But, what about wine and coffee?
It's true that drinking moderate alcohol can help "thin the blood and make your healthier. But, many people are Alcoholics by genetics, and on sip can get them hooked for a life time. It's better to stick with grape juice (which does just as good) then risk the potential damage.
For coffee, IT IS NOT THE CAFFEINE! Mormons don't drink coffee because it stains, it's hot, and it has other unhealthy chemicals. Sure, caffeine isn't really good either, but; the heat can burn the palette, and cause ulcers in conjunction with the chemicals. I don't think I need to talk about the stains.
Hope this helps.

Coffee was believed to have been discovered by monks in the 800's in the middle east and got to Europe by the 1600's.
That was almost 1000 years after Jesus and it didn't exist in the old testament.
The only drug discussed in the bible was wine. There is no prohibition from God on this substance but it mentions like all foods, consume it in moderation. Jesus first miracle was changing water into wine. Using wine as an analogy since it stimulates one, I can only deduce that had coffee been around it would have fallen under the same category.
PS For some of the temperance types, please don't try and tell me ancient wine was really grape juice. In the book of proverbs it says do not over indulge in wine or you will feel you are on a mast of a ship in a storm at sea and the next morning you'll awaken feeling like you were bitten by a poison serpent... you'll need to take more to quell thold feeling or in other words a piece of hair from the dog that just bit you! That doesn't sound like grape juice to me!

Coffee is never mentioned by name in the Doctrine and Covenants, but "Hot Drinks" are.
Emma Smith was a hardcore christian woman who did not approve of the drinking, smoking, chewing, nor the consumption of tea or coffee going on in their house. Then Joseph had a revelation, and there ya go.
Caffeine was identified early as the rationale, and one of the reasons Coke became an antimormon drink. Chocolate, which also contains caffeine, has not be under the ban. Hot Chocolate, a hot drink is also excluded from being a sin.
Makes perfect sense, because it's sooooo true!

I have to say that I love Mormons. Their beliefs and lack of questioning them for themselves is quite amusing to me. If you ask 20 Mormons the same question, you will probably get 19 different answers, then usually comes down to "faith" and not solid evidences, other than that is what someone told them. Very interesting culture!

Mormon chiming in: Coffee is bad for your health- that's what it amounts too. If not being able to drink coffee or whine is preventing you from joining a religion you probably have bigger questions to ponder than what can be answered here on yahoo.

God does not want us to take anything into our body which is unhealthy. There are several chemicals in coffee which are not healthy (not just caffeine) and therefore, we don't drink it. We also don't drink tea nor do we drink alcohol in any form. We're supposed to refrain from eating too much meat as well, but not everyone is so judicious about this commandment.

From the Church's page on the Word of Wisdom:
The Word of Wisdom is a law of health revealed by the Lord for the physical and spiritual benefit of His children. On February 27, 1833, as recorded in section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord revealed which foods are good for us to eat and which substances are not good for the human body. He also promised health, protection, knowledge, and wisdom to those who obey the Word of Wisdom.
[...]
When people purposefully take anything harmful into their bodies, they are not living in harmony with the Word of Wisdom. Illegal drugs can especially destroy those who use them. The abuse of prescription drugs is also destructive spiritually and physically

There is no way I am giving up my caffeine to become a Mormon. Jesus turned water into wine, so I don't see what would be wrong with wine. John the Baptist did not drink strong drink. That is why the Baptists do not drink wine.

We aren't so hungry for members that we believe that we can relax the standards that Christ Himself has set for us. Sure, we can say,, believe what you want, just come to our church, but that's not what God wants.
We believe that God does NOT want us to drink coffee. If you are so addicted that you can't give it up, then you don't need to belong to our church. God wants your undivided attention.
