I would have but, I guess if it was advertised on a freecycle website the collectors would assume that it was totally free. It also depends on how much money you have. With something like a sofa, I would be glad to get rid of it - you often can't give them to charities anymore because of fire regs unless they have the labels on etc.

No i wouldn`t.That would be contrary to the spirit of freecycle of which i`m a member.I`ve freecycled loads of stuff myself and would feel terribly insulted if someone offered me money after collecting a freecycled item.If i wanted money i`d do a bootsale or put it on e-bay.Some people simply have no manners otherwise they`d have expressed their appreciation for the sofa and your husband`s help in a way that leaves a glow in your heart.Giving or receiving payment is anti-freecycle so don`t even think about it! I would offer a token though-a drink, some homemade delicacy?Which is how lovely friendships develop through freecycling.Take more time to decide whom you`d like your items to go to.Get them to call you if they`re interested, talk to them and you`ll spot the greedy, the selfish and the rude in seconds. You don`t owe them anything so you give someone else.

have done, via freecycle.
The rule is no money exchanges hands! You fail!
It is hard not to want to hand something over though I agree with that, but if you did this everytime, you may aswell go to ebay and compete with all the bidders there for the newer stuff and low and behold it, find your older item doesnt sell! So you throw it away as freecycle has been obliterated as everyones decided to pay for the items on offer in hope they will own them. So the land fill grows and grows and the reason? cos we could give it away for free, so we threw it away at a cost to the planet.
what do I think?
I think that you should look at the cost to the enviroment, I am not saying get everything from free cycle- unless your going for sainthood here! but it all adds up and if we dont get into a habit of recycling inorder to save the needlesss rubbish being dumped, then we'll endup feeling the results.

Think I would be just glad to get rid of the old sofas for nothing and be happy I have helped someone out, when you offer items on sites like freecycle it is normally people that couldn't afford those kind of things and it could have cost them for the van to take it off your hands.

I use freecycle too. My husband had to take the loveseat down the stairs because both parties were a bit disabled and I had to watch this stranger's kid who was running about. I think they should have tipped US.
But as freecycle says, no money changes hands. And you do what you gotta do to get rid of stuff. You tip professionals, not random people.

well the thing if its all in the name FREEcycle, its in the guidelines about money, i mean how do you know that the people you GAVE the items to aren't completely skint? you didn't HAVE to give the man who delivered your new sofa any thing as he Gets Paid to do his job! if you think that you should get a tip for giving things away then i would think you would be better off selling stuff instead.

I use freecycle, not lots. but i do like to look at it. So far i have asked for a few books to help me with my degree at uni, (psychology with criminology) and a lady happened to have just over £100 worth of criminology books that she didnt need as some one had bought her them and didnt really understand what she did, she was a prison officer and those books were not of relevance to her so she gave them me, who as a student and desperatly clinging to the lint in my pocket, thought was great!
i have also given away sim cards that i do not need.... and iv also recieved private tuition for my cource from free cycle. i will give them a box of choccies, or some thing. i wont give them money as its sorta against the rules, but its the thought that counts. i usually write them a little letter, nothing too much, jjust to say thanks and all.
its the spreading of karma, and helping the environment at once i like about it. its a bit like "boobkcrossing" where you have a book that you dont want any more... and just leave it in the street, on a park bench or even in a cafe or tescos loos! you go home, tell some one where you left it and if someone else is interested they will go look for it!
its just free harmless fun!
keep it up i say!

errr no!
It is a freecycler website, therefore the stuff is FREE.
If you had wanted money for it you should have sold it in the newspaper or on trademe etc.
The guy who delivered your NEW sofa should have been paid because YOU paid money for the sofa and HE delivered it. The guy who got your old sofa came ands got it himself.
You seem to have missed the point of the freecycle website.

Freecycle is a site where you look to get things for FREE! If you expected money for it you should have advertised in time to sell it before your new one was delivered.

freecycle is mostly a fantastic site and way of passing stuff on that otherwise would go to the tip... the whole point of it is that things are free.. i have however once given someone a bottle of wine as they gave us a new sofa and new bunk beds for my son, but noone using freecycle should EXPECT a payment or present for giving something away..expecting people to be polite and say thankyou however is very reasonable! thing is really they have done you a favour as well as you doing them one
