Extra virgin olive oil comes from the very first pressing of the olives, therefore it is the highest quality and the most pure.

I don't think there is any real difference between the brands, but I wouldn't buy store or generic brands, just to be safe. Olive oil can go rancid easily if it's not stored in the proper conditions.

Extra virgin is the very first pressing and is very pure and low acid. There are large differences in extra virgin olive oil. The best way to know is to taste it. Buy the smallest bottles you can and taste a small amount. Hold it in your mouth and really taste it. Flowery? Bitter? Buttery? - It all depends what you like. Use this grade in salad, on bread, or other items where the flavor of the oil is very important.

Less expensive pure olive oils are less flavorful and higher acid. Good for low temperature frying, cooked sauces, etc. Though I use a cheap EVOO in most cases

Any thing less than "pure" save your money and buy generic oil.

Most of the cooking shows say to get the extra virgin olive oil. But it is pretty thick and I don't like the strong flavor. So I prefer the lighter olive oils. I don't know any brands because we just buy what they have at costco.

Cold pressed oils are more expensive, but are better quality. The manufacturers take great care that no heat is used in order to squeeze the oil out. When heat is used to extract the oil, the properties of the oil change. Look for the words "cold pressed" on the bottle. Definitely better tasting!

Extra virgin olive oil is better for salads because it can lose it's desirable flavor when exposed to heat. For general cooking regular olive oil is fine.
