So, I got my dog three years ago almost to the day and I got him from a breeder in Missouri at the time I was young and didn't ask alot of questions. I was told he was a pure bred pomeranian but a little larger. I paid $400.00 for him when I picked him up. Got his AkC papers and he is registered. I always have had a suspision that he is not pure bred. He has some of the characteristics of one i.e. curled tail, fluffy coat but that is where the similarities end. He has a pointy nose, has a low bark and is 20 pounds!! He has recently run into medical issues and I really need to know his breed. I have approached the breeder in years past begging to know his true breed, she insists he is pom. I am pissed at this woman for lying to me and do not know how to convince her to tell me. Bottom line I love my dog no matter what he is, but I have a right to know and need to what do I do. Thank you so much!

Pomerania's can be that big. The size of the dog can go back 4 generations. I had a pom that was 16 pounds as an adult. My 7 pound pom has a daughter that is 12 pounds as an adult. If you want to know if the breeder you got your dog from is a reputable contact the AKC and see if they are in good standing with them. They are probably just a back yard breeder and are not breeding for the good of the breed. They are breeding to make money possibly and do not care what the pups end up like. The bark of a pom can be anywhere from a shrill yappy bark to a low deeper bark. They can have pointy noses too. Just love your dog you have now and learn from your mistake and next time you get a pup ask all the questions you have and do research on the breed you are interested in. Go to the AKC website and learn about the breed and then also go to the breed website, like the American Pomeranian Club and learn more. Your dog is probably a pom, just not a quality one. My 16 pound boy was my favorite baby and I would do anything it took to keep him healthy. Unfortunately I lost him a little over a year ago but I know he had the best care he could have. I now am raising poms and love them dearly but I will never forget my sweet boy. I hope all goes well for you and your dog, it sound like you love him no matter what and that is very good for him to have a loning home.

First you can attempt to notify AKC. When you come into breeders like this it's almost impossible to get the info of teh truth. there is a chance it is pure. I worked ffor a chihuahua breeder. her dogs were kept inside and when they were outside someone was with them to make sure no other dogs would get to tehm. This woman had 5 generations back on this one breeding( of both parents). The mom had only 2 pups. one was fullgrown at 3 pounds show quality. The other was a throughback and grew to be 35 pounds. going back teh 5 genertions on each side they were never over 5 pounds until this one. Remember all small breeds have been bred down from larger dogs.
There is no way of ever knowing exactly what you have even if this so called breeder does tell yuou otherwise how much can you trust her. Anymore papers mean nothing as anyone can get and put whatever they want.
Good luk though with her.

First of all sometimes a small type Pom will through off a larger type Pom,so it is possible that your Pom is purbred, but you can contact AKC at the site below and request that this breeder have a DNA test done on the parents and you will have to do the same on your Pom.AKC can inform how you can go about having your pet DNA tested. The AKC site is

Purebred means both parents are of the same breed. But backyard breeder who don't breed to conform to the standard will breed together two poor quality, faulty dogs who produce traits that are so far from the standard the pups don't even look like the breed they are supposed to be! I'm always having people ask me if their beagle is purebred because it looks nothing like a beagle! It's a disgrace, really. Sadly, purebred doesn't always mean well-bred. So, that "breeder" may not necessarily be lying to you, she just doesn't care if the poms she's producing even look remotely like poms.

Oh no, don't get me started on Missouri Greeders (no that's not a misprint).

I'm not saying all breeders in Missouri a "greeders", but...... hello.... it's listed as the Puppymill capitol of the US.

Unfortunately, you bought a pup under the pretense of it being a certain breed and didn't question it for 3 yrs.

There is DNA parentage testing, however, you would have to have your dog and the alleged sire and dam tested also.

You could get a lawyer or threaten to report her to the AKC, the Better Business Bureau, etc.

papers don't mean much. he is a spitz-type (poms are in this category) and would likely suffer from diseases that affect that type. (although his illness may have nothing to do with breed at all) talk to your vet.
