if i speek spanish to an italian would they understand me?

Basically an Italian will roughly understand what you're meaning provided you speak slowly but you need to consider that there is a very high risk of misunderstandings too.

Here below a few words with the same spelling but with different meaning in the 2 languages:

Spanish "largo" (long) is in Italian "lungo"
Italian "largo" (wide) is in Spanish "ancho"
Spanish "caldo" (broth) is in Italian "brodo"
Italian "caldo" (warm) is in Spanish "caliente"
Spanish "burro" (donkey) is in Italian "asino"
Italian "burro" (butter) is in Spanish "mantequilla"

I recognise a little of Spanish and not too long ago heard a couple of one of a kind individuals speakin Italian in entrance of me (it used to be being translated to English for me) and even as there have been a few similarities, there have been a LOT of diffrences, I essentially couldn' understad a phrase of it although I knew that there have been phrases that gave the impression of Spanish phrases (even though that might were the ranslation alternatively than the language itself). If you spoke in Spanish, I would undestand you, but of course I couldn't understand all words... There are some differences between Italian and Spanish. I noticed that a lot of people confuse Italian with Spanish or viceversa and I can't stand it hahaha

Two different languages, different syntax more then different grammar , if u r native speakers of both this language probably u'll get the meaning but no more otherwise no chance to get a **** , at school or in a normal language's academy we use to consider Italian as a b1 level for what concern listening not the same happens for Spanish , slow or not what really matters is the correct lexical selection u'll do

Most probably they would. You may have to speak slowly, but they would understand the gist of the conversation and be able to respond, even if they do not understand each and every word. If the other person studied Latin, that is a good basis.

That is how I started to learn Spanish, by speaking with Spanish persons (I didn't know even a word back then) and slowly my ears (and mind) became accustomed to the words and their "cadence" and pronounciation. I had some very interesting and sometimes funny conversations as I was learning, was worth it.

I would say yes. I'm from spain and i have a lot of friends from Italy. If I talk with them in spanish, and they talk to me in Italian, we can understand mostly and easily each others. Yes, as the man above said, there's some words you have to be careful with, but with the context you notice soon that something's wrong, then we ask them to explain it to us, and there's no problem.

A very important thing is that we have to speak slower as if we talk to other person of our mother tongue, because we need time to recognize the words.

Some words are and seem rather similar, but think of it this way, do you think if you spoke Italian to a Spanish person, would they understand? Perhaps not.

You can catch some words, you pretty much understand because of the context but both parties have to speak pretty slow. You got the idea of what they are trying to say. If it is a long conversation then it is harder.
