Yes, I've had them 'under my tongue' ... and DO NOT FREAK OUT. Get some Campho-Phenique and put a 'cotton tipped swab' into it, and 'dab that' onto the sore and it should 'heal up' in about two weeks. It would take less than a week if your 'immune system' wasn't 'depressed' (that's one of the 'side effects of thyroid cancer) but it will still 'heal' the sore a lot faster than if you don't do anything at all.

Canker sores are a common form of mouth ulcer. They occur in women more often than men. They may occur at any age, but usually first appear between the ages of 10 and 40. Canker sores usually appear on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips, tongue, soft palate, and the base of the gums. Canker sores can run in families. They may also be linked to problems with the body's immune (defense) system. The sores may occur after a mouth injury due to dental work, aggressive tooth cleaning, or biting the tongue or cheek. Canker sores can be triggered by emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (especially iron, folic acid, or Vitamin B-12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and similar situations. They occur most commonly with viral infections. In some cases, the cause can not be identified. If your condition is causing you concern, then you would be advised to consult your doctor for diagnosis and possible treatment.

Hi!! You got some good answers above. All I want to add is to tell you that you ain't alone. I get canker sores also from time to time. And twice I have had them on my tongue!!
Painful little S.O.B's..aren't they? I used use use Campho-Phenique (until I could not find it anymore) and then switched to Anebesol. They both work about the same.
Don't freak out just yet.....Cankers take time to heal....and I promise to pray for you! :-)

me: *if* it's a herpes effect (and 3/4 of all Amrericans have it) then BHT is the absolute *best* thing for it, prevention-wise
BHT is non-patentable, so zero dollars are spent researching it. My personal experience if total "two thumbs up"
I don't know if this applies to what you're experienceing right now, but there it is.
good luck :)))
CITE:
Based on anecdotal information, it appears that a dosage of 250 mg. to 1000 mg. per day may be effective for many people. Dr. Ward Dean, M.D. recommends a dosage of 250 to 500 mg. per day as an anti-oxidant and 2000 mg. per day in divided doses for acute herpes outbreaks.(
