I saw someone on the track today doing lapse; he did a couple lapses and then ran one or two lapses backwards and then repeat the same thing again many times. Does anyone know the purpose of running backwards? What does that training do?

Running backwards has been known to prevent and treat shin splints. I used to get them a lot. I ran backwards and they disappeared.
Why he would run two full laps backwards, IDK. I only did 1/2 - 4/3 backwards for my shin splints. You should ask him next time you see him!

I have seen people who would run laps in the opposite direction just to change things up. I don't think running backwards will do much for you unless you actually run a considerable distance that way. You are using the muscles differently than forward running, but why? Unless you are a boxer and want to train backing up.

I am slightly confused by your question.
1. if HE was running backwards, he was doing this to even out the muscle on the front and back of his shin to prevent shin splints.
2. if he were running around the track in a reverse direction, this so he can get an equal amount of strength on both legs.

I've seen people do this on the treadmill at my gym...I think it works different muscles in your legs than running forward does. So...possibly it's to even out muscle strength.
