I have gained a lot of weight lately. I want to lose 20kgs in total (44 pounds). I have been on many diets in my life, and I always end up gaining more than I lost. I don't want that to happen again. I heard a doctor say that we should lose 1/10 of our weight per year, then remain stable for a year, then lose another 1/10 and so on. But this way, it would take me about 5 years to lose the weight. The question is, is it OK to lose the 20 kilos in one year? Has anyone done that and managed to keep the weight off for a long time (more than 2-3 years?)

PS. Please don't tell me how to lose the weight. I eat healthily and I exercise. I have lost 4 kilos (9 pounds) in the last 6 weeks. I am not starving or banning any food group. I am just asking how much you think I should lose.
