It is very sporadic. I am constantly adding water and coolant. Does anyone have a clue to whether it could be a thermostat or water pump issue... or any other suggestions!!

Thanks!

It is very possible that your thermostat is stuck closed and causing the overheating problem.

However it sounds more likely to be your radiator cap has gone bad and is not longer holding proper pressure.

Change your radiator cap. ($5-$10 at a parts store) Only do this when the engine is COOL!!!!

Here is an easy way to check the thermostat. Start the engine and let it heat up. Feel the top radiator hose. When the thermostat opens the top radiator hose will become hot. If it never gets hot the thermostat is stuck and will have to be replaced. You need to find out if you have a coolant leak that is causing the engine to run hot after it becomes low on coolant or if the engine running hot is causing the coolant to become low after it boils over. A bad water pump will almost always leak coolant from the weep hole on the bottom or around the pulley shaft. Try to determine where the coolant is leaking from. It could be leaking from a hose, the waterpump, or the radiator. If you determine there are no leaks and the coolant is boiling over after the engine overheats the problem could be a clogged radiator.

Yeah, I bet it is the Thermostat and/or Radiator Cap. Be sure to replace that water/antifreeze mixture soon with pure anti-freeze. The engine will run a little cooler and get better MPG, plus you will limit the amount of corrosion in coolant system.

Here is a suggestion Look very carefully and see if you have any water stains around engine, If not put a piece of cardboard under car after you fill radiator and either leave it over night or run it for about 10 minutes over the cardboard if it leaks it will show you where it is , hope this helps.

Here's the answer we hope is wrong. Check your oil with the dip stick. Are there any signs of bubbles? Any creamy looking substance? Does any white smoke come out of the exhaust? How about water? If you answared yes to any of those questions you MAY have a blown head gasket. This is something that can not wait. It must be fixed. You probably have a 3.7 v6. Repair should be less than $300.

probably overheating after the water/coolant leaks out, you might have a blockage in there somewhere, your radiator valve might not be opening.

leave the car running on idle for ages and see what happens e.g does the fan cut in, any strange noises from the radiator etc
