I would love to buy a DVD+recorder/VHS that is good quality but at a good price. Any advice is welcome.

Unless you have personal VHS tapes, don't bother. For commercial movies, you will have to beat macrovision copy protection and at the end of the day, the video quality , even at best recording quality is not that great.

There are 2-3 mpeg encoder ICs these days that everyone is using, so whatever you buy will be pretty much the same.
