I'm calling up a business today about an application I submitted awhile ago and I don't know what to say exactly.

You can say that you are following up on an application you recently submitted, and you are still very interested in the position. Can they let you know if the position is still available. If the job is still available, you can ask how long they expect the process to take. If the position has been filled, you can ask if they know of any similar positions currently open to which you can apply.
