Unless your city has issued a warning on it, tap water is fine. The way my dogs splash water all over the place, I couldn't filter water quick enough, haha.

I gotta go there! Look, a dog will drink out of the toilet, a dirty puddle on the side of a swamp, oh and swamp water too. This goes along with the food thing. Think about it: The food manufacturers have created such a diet crazy group of pet owners they will spend a ridiculous amount on magic foods, only to find their prized pooch out in the yard eating the *** out of a dead bird, feathers and all. I have four Labs, 2,3, 5 and a yellow that is 13 and still runs around like a pup, to which my own vet said: she looks like shes 8 and her teeth are perfect. When he heard I feed her table scraps and also the occasional t-bone leftover, he said that's what they would eat in the wild...(although probably not t-bones) She gets hard food only, plus the once in a while scraps, tap water if she's not drinking the car wash water or the puddle by the road, and I have never had plans to use her as a test...but the proof is in the dog. It's amazing that with proper marketing we actually buy bottled water, when the stuff out of our tap is the primary reason for our life expectancy doubling since the discovery of the importance of clean water sources. Your pet is better (as you are) to drink water out of the tap, as it contains minerals that are removed in the over marketed bottled stuff. As for flouridation and chlorine, there is less chlorine in your water than you think, and also the municipal water plants test constantly, have higher standards than the bottled water people and they add a little flouride to help your teeth...oh by the way: for almost nothing!

I'm sure regular tap water is fine; otherwise, we would have had some sort of epidemic by now.

My two dogs are spoiled in many ways. On the water issue, I compromise: every night I have hot tea before I go to bed. So, I fill the teakettle pretty much to the top and fix my husband and I hot tea with water that has fully boiled for about 1-2 minutes. In the morning when I feed my two "girls", the water in my teakettle left over from the night before is nice and cool - and I could be wrong - but I think having brought it to a full boil may have burned off anything negative.

Oh, Lord, if there is life after death, please let me come back as one of my dogs (or, better yet, my husband) !!!!!!

I would give a dog tap water. People drink tap water. Unless you are worried about a certain chemical in the water. I am sure some people give there pets bottled water too! I guess it would come down to personal choice.

It is ok to give them tap water. I don't see what the fuss is about. However, at my home the pipes are realy old so I don't drink the tap water, I do cook with it. I have gotten into the habit of giving my cat bottled water....when i give her water from the tap, she won't drink it. But she knows when I open that bottle of water.

The greatest cartoon strip I ever saw as far as for dogs.
Panel 1, the dog drinking out of the gutter.
Panel 2, the dog drinking out of the toilet.
Panel 3, the owner's saying " There is a kibble in the water, we need to change it".
Filtered water? You have to be kidding.

There is nothing wrong with most tap water in the US. Have you ever seen your dog drink from a puddle? I'm sure the tap is cleaner.

It depends on your water. I had great water, but when I moved I noticed my dog not drinking as much. My water system now doesn't taste great, and I drink bottled water. It also has a lot of deposits and minerals.

Eventually, I took my dog to the vet and found he had developed Bladder stones. My vet recommended a dietary change and bottled water. The bottled water was to eleviate the minerals, and to encourage the dog to drink more water. Well, my dog now drinks water like crazy and has past most of the stones without surgery. (We are still waiting to see if the other stones will pass or if he will need to have surgery.)

Trust me, if I had it to do again. I would never put my dog on tap water that I don't drink.

Easy answer. Do you drink the tap water? If so, it's fine for your doggie. If not, it's not okay for your doggie either. I drink only filtered water and only give that to my cats and bird. It's up to you. I can't stand the taste of tap water, but your dog usually won't even care. We have a reverse osmosis filtering system under our sink with a spigot to dispense the fresh clean water, so I don't have to buy bottled. I use it for everything. Cooking, drinking and to spritz my walking stick bugs. The chlorine can't be good for them!
