When my '07 Prius is in reverse, it beeps like a big fat truck would. I don't know what purpose it serves, other than to annoy everyone on the car. Is there a way to turn the beeping off?

Here's How:

1. Press the Power button to turn on the Prius.
2. Set the Trip/ODO display to ODO (Odometer). Tip: It cannot be set to Trip A or Trip B. Also, if it is already in the Odometer mode, you’ll need to cycle through the options until you reach Odometer again.
3. Press the Power button to turn off the Prius.
4. With your foot on the brake pedal, press the Power button again to turn on the Prius. Continue to keep your foot on the brake.
5. Within 6 seconds of the Ready light illuminating, press and
hold the Trip/ODO button for at least 10 seconds
6. After the 10 seconds have past, while still holding the Trip/
ODO button, shift the gear selector from P to R and back to P.(Aren’t you glad kept your foot on the brake since step 4!)
7. Now release the Trip/ODO button.
8. The Trip/ODO display should now read “b on” or “b off”. Use the Trip/ODO button to toggle between the two options. “b on” means the audible reverse beep on. “b off” means the audible reverse beep is off is off.
9. Press the Power button to turn off the Prius.
10. You did it! The reverse beep should be turned off. Try it by
Powering on the Pruis, with your foot on the brake, and shifting the Prius into Reverse.

Tips:
Do not have someone sitting in the passenger’s seat when performing this sequence.
If you ever disconnect the 12 volt battery, the Prius will revert to the beeping on. You'll need to go through the whole sequence to turn the beep off again.
This sequence will not turn the beeping off for the European version of the Prius.

Good luck!

if you are driving a manuel prius then its a safety feature, if not then i can see that being really annoying. Call the dealership and chances are they can disable it.
