Some one has recently asked me how to read the Bible as true history rather then as a fictional book. It was hard for me to answer since I have always thought of the Bible as truth. Any ideas?

If anyone were to choose to read the Bible in chronological order, there are 14 books that you can read and understand the Bible in order believe it or not. It also tells you how and where to fit in the other books.

Jeff Cavins developed The Great Adventure in 1984 when he realized that many Christians did not grasp “the big picture” of the Bible. Though people knew selected stories, they were not able to connect them into a full narrative. His answer was to identify the books of the Bible that tell the story from beginning to end. By reading just those 14 “narrative” books, a chronological story emerges. From this idea grew the immensely popular Bible Timeline program, that teaches the story in a way that is easy to remember, and helps people to continue reading Scripture on their own. Hundreds of thousands of people have learned to read the Bible through this system.

Yes you must tell them that to truely understand the bible one should have many years of study. I have heard many people who "read" the bible and can quote and memorize up a storm, but you should be the bigger person in this situation and say - I cannot help you. In fact perhaps you should join this person on their search to truely understand the bible. The bible is ment to encourage your faith, it is not a dictionary!! Some priests spend their whole lives educating themselves on this very question. If I were asked that same question I would have to tell the person I couldn't help them but I'd be will to learn with them.

If there is interest to read for seekiing to know The Faith then first I would recomend a book called The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus http://www.goodseed.com

if there is no interest in The Faith then there is nothing in The Bible for this person. Only those who are open to the leading of God through The Holy Spirit will find what God has for them There

The Bible is a guideline. A book of parables and stories to help guide your life. You can't possibly believe that everything in the Bible is true. It frequently contradicts itself and in my opinion there are stories that have nothing to do with God what so ever. If your friend is able to think for him or herself then you won't be able to teach him or her how to read it as fact.

Simple; take everything it says as literally true, use no critical thinking skills or logic, and ignore the contradictions within the Bible and between the Bible and the present-day understanding of the world.

Well, it is neither true nor history. Any book written on the basis of oral tradition probably has bits of truth interwoven with exaggeration - it's the way things were in a time when 99% of the population was illiterate. Stories, passed via he said/she said, down through generations.

At best it can be considered historical gossip.

You are starting off on the wrong premise, assuming it is a fictional work. The majority is true and accepted history, with exception of obvious prophecy, such as Revelations.

What makes u believe that it is the Truth? coz you have faith or are supposed to have faith....

Do you knowthat Solomon as described in the bible is not True ..It was not as big as mentioned in the Bible...

Bible can be a sourece of Wisdom..especially from Jesus..but if you are open minded and not biased you'll find many loopholes..If you are a believer youll refuse to see them youll be blinded by your "faith".

Well, if its true then you can go back in history with it. Go to the Gospels and talk about the roman and jewish government. Or you can go to Genesis, the beginning, and show him how it matches with science and how we were created, and why we sin and why we need a saviour. Go to answeringenesis.org for more help on the beginning. Help him to understand why we need Jesus, if he doesn't know he's lost it will be hard for him to understand that he needs to be saved.
