"They" are the Mayans, and the New Age astrologers that are extrapolating on same data gleaned from Mayan records/monuments.

Well, Y2K was supposed to bring disaster. There was also the Great Disappointment of October 22, 1844 (The Seventh Day Adventists).

The thing is, if I understand right the 2012 date isn't where the calendar ends, just the end of a Long Count Calendar cycle. Kind of like how December 31st is the end of the year for us.

According to Wikipedia:
On monuments where the full date is shown, the end of creation is said to be October 21, 4772 AD. According to the Maya there will be a baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of the 13th 400 year period, but not the end of the world.[8]

I can only assume 2012 was choosen as the "end date" because the Mayan calendar stops there. However, the only reason why it stopped was because there was a limit even to the Mayan's knowledge of astrology, and it was a convenient stopping point. It is simply put as an end of an era, not the end of the world. People have choosen that date to say thats when the world will end, however they fail to realize that the Mayans simply didn't predict any further.

First, note that the mayans have still been te most advanced in their calendar systems and it should be well noted their calendar (of many) that ends on 2012 is not the end of the world but the end of an age. An age that shall be transformed beyond our current understanding and it may mean much death, which you can easily relate to in the current state of our world with resources dwindling faster than spring flowers. The key in understanding 2012 is looking at every cultural understanding of the future of makind. The problem with America is everyone gets caght in one bias, be it christian, or just their silly ignorance not knowing ancient history...

Dear b0275777,

Noah's flood occurred in 4990 BC. This worldwide flood destroyed everything except Noah, his family, and all the animals on the ark. God talks about the flood in 2 Peter 3 and then transitions to the end of the world-the world will be destroyed by fire. This interesting verse is found in verse 8: "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." Notice that God is talking to His children (beloved=true believers).

If we multiply 7 X 1000=7000 years. Add 7000 + 4990=2011 AD. (I multiply 7 by 1000 because God told Noah to get everybody in the ark 7 day before the flood; Genesis 7:4). Perhaps 2011 AD will be the year that Christ returns to bring judgment upon the earth-end of the world.

I do not know where they came up with 2012 but it is not in the Bible.

There was that one time when "they" said the world was going to end in 1823 and it did. However, it came back again very quickly so most people didn't notice.

Of course I'm kidding.

I find it better to stop worrying about when it is going to end. Instead I want to live like it could end today. Do what needs to be done now. Don't wait until it's too late.

I should also point out that even though this is what I want to do I find myself frequently missing the target.

That that I would do I do not and that that I would not do I do and all that. :)

The Aztecs are the ones who stated that the world would end in 2012. Although I am a Pagan I don't think they are anymore right in their prediction than any other. I for one will take a wait and see attitude.

Constantly! And so far every prediction has been dead wrong. I guess Jesus knew what He was talking about when He said that no-one would know the hour nor the day. Based on His words, whenever I hear a prediction about the end of the time, I figure I can be certain of just one thing - it won't happen then!

People will always be saying that. Really, who cares when it happens? If it ends, it ends. What are you going to do, make sure you back-up your computer, clean out your bank account, pay all your debts? The only thing you need to do is pray that God forgives all of the sins you did (some of us more than others) and just continue on with life until it happens. We will all be going together, so when it iends, it ends. Why dredge on it?

Because the Mayan Calender runs out in 2012. When they created it, they could find no more time after that.
