Hi, I am graduating from college this year and would like to thank a few of my professors who were extremely helpful and supportive. Is it appropriate to buy them flowers (one of them is male) or shall I get something else, like pens?
Thank you for your answer.

Why not make a gift to the university (for use of the department where you received your degree) in honor of that professor?

My favorite psychology professor had a scholarship fund established in his honor and people give to it on a regular basis. The income from the money deposited in that scholarship fund goes to make scholarship grants to needy psychology students.

Pens aren't that great a gift, unless you buy a really good one, which can be pricey. If you know something about the prof's tastes, go with that (i.e. a good bottle of wine or scotch). Proflowers.com sells gift baskets of all sorts, if you don't want to "do" flowers. Don't forget to include a personal note about how much they meant to you or the impact they had on your life. The gift won't last; the personal sentiment will touch them forever.

I just graduated, also, and am planning to do the same thing for a couple of my professors. What about a gift certificate to a local restaurant? It would be a thoughtful way to show your appreciation, and a nice treat for an instructor who clearly spends a lot of time at work.

That is a really good question as I am in the same situation myself. I am going to definitly send my advisor a card, and I think I might give him a gift certificate to one of the local coffee chains.

No offense, but have you ever gotten a pen as a gift? Not so much fun. Give them something that they can actually use instead of lose.

This is my favorite site for selecting gifts. It allows you to narrow your search by relationship, age of the person, gender, reason for the gift, etc.

I would give them a candy bouquet. Check out the one below.
