I went to the doctor last week because of a very swollen and painful lymph node. He gave me an antibiotic to take for a week. It is still swollen today so I called him. He referred me to a surgeon. I didn't ask on the phone today, but what would a surgeon do to it? What could be a cause of the swelling? I've never had swollen glands before.

I don't know what a surgeon would be doing to you, but you shouldn't be taking antibiotics for swollen glands. Lymph nodes usually come with a common cold.....it's just a sore throat, and doctors are suppose to be cutting back on administrating antibiotics for stuff as simple as this. You may have a swollen salivary gland....that can be very painful, and it doesn't go away. Eating, and a variety of other things can irritate this. See a different doctor for a second opinion before you let any surgeon cut you open.

Try this site. You don't say where the swollen lymph node is and they are spread throughout your body.

Doctors thought I had a swollen lymph node and gave me antibiotics. They did not help. It ended up being an encapsulated staph infecton in my neck- to the right of my voice box. It was wrapped around my carotid artery so it was a good thing they decided to remove it! (And yes, I have the scar to prove it)
Not trying to scare you, it was a very unusual situation. I am just trying to point out that there are more reasons for a swollen lymph node than your bodies natural defense to infection.
The surgeon may biopsy it, go in and remove it or try more antibiotics and warm compresses. And it is probably a one time deal, this has never happened to me again and it's been 16 years.

Hope you have a simple and complete recovery from what ever this is.

well basically lymph nodes get swollen due to an infection.. your immune system is reacting to a foreign substance that might have been introduce to your body... there are different types of cells that fights infection... particularly your white blood cells which have different types also... what they do is eat up that foreign substance like in pacman and then go to your lymph nodes to get clean and empty their tummy of the infection they had just eaten... that's why lymph nodes get swollen it means that there are lot of white blood cells inside of them... it's a body's way of compromising... i don't know why you need a surgeon for it... you should go for a second opinion... there's just no way that he might incised you and drain what's inside of your swollen lymph nodes..

I get swollen lymphnodes all the time, due to sinuses, but it's really on the outside of the nodes.

(1) Try to gargle with salt water, which may help to reduce the swelling.
(2) If you have any sort of sinus drainage, try to control it with an over-the-counter sinus medication.

The surgeon could remove them. Swelling may be from sinus drainage. Gurgle some salt water for a few days and see if that works...as well as drinking orange juice.

swollen lymph nodes, and being reffered to a surgeon, possiblity of lymphoma.. it is a type of cancer to the lymph nodes... but it really could just be an infection that is causing it so ask your doctor... hope you feel better.
