Sorry! l worded that wrong! I meant to say what do people think are the real reasons that parents abuse their children?

I think people who sexually abuse their children are just sick. I think that most people who physically abuse their children don't know enough about children and expect them to behave in ways that they are not developmentally capable of. I also think that children who are abused as children often abuse their own kids because that was the way they were "taught" to deal with children.

Because some people really do abuse their children. I worked in the Social Work Field for many years, and the stories I could tell you of abuse would make you want to throw up.

There are many reasons that people abuse their children. They treat their kids the way their parents treated them which we now know wasn't always the best way (my mother had a paddle which my father had made for her). There are also parents who can't deal with the frustration in their lives so they take it out on the nearest weak person; this happens to be their children in many cases. I believe that helping the parent to calm down or calling Child Protective Services is every persons responsibility.

Because they do. To someone that would never abuse their children this sounds ridiculous but it happens. I work in the field. I find foster parents so that kids that are being abused can be taken out of the home and put in foster care so that they aren't abused anymore. It's a horrible reality. Thinking, or pretending that it doesn't happen is very naiive!

I think that it happens because they have no control over themselves or their emotions. There's a fine line between punishment & abuse and sometimes people just cross that line to far. Kids are now getting worse at back-chat and this also triggers parents. It's wrong and more should be done to those that abuse there children.

It's because the parents are messed up, not the children. Some people just never should have had children to begin with. Sometimes it's a power thing.

Be a little more specific. Are you referring to spanking, leaving them home alone, yelling or all of the above?

There are real parents that do abuse their children, it can be in many forms. If you knowingly leave your child with a child molester, it's abuse. If you leave a 1 yr. old home alone, abuse. If you spank your child for back talking or hitting, discipline. There is a very thin line between beating your child and spanking your child. I spank, but if I ever see a child being kicked or slapped or "spanked" with aggression, I'm on the phone w/DCFS and in the parents face.
