I know God will accept you as you are...

But wouldn't want to look your best out of respect for God?

Yes dressing up can show respect for God and that is what I try to do.

Some dress up for the praise of others, but I am not going to use that as an excuse not to dress up out of respect for God.

However, I like it when I am told I am pretty. oh my vanity -- what can I do?

I have nice clothes

I choose not to go to impress

there are some in church who judge you as if you are wearing the best clothes possible and use that as a status gauge and then talk down to you

what I do wear is clean, neat and presentable and draws attention away from me rather than to me

I think if people can't respect me, neither can they respect "god"

after all, most who worship a god claim a scripture

"what you did to the -least- of these, you did to me"

yet they focus more on self and gaining power, control and authority

look up religion in books, it's pretty much what is about, and must be supported by worshipers or it fails and falls away as if the god can't stand not being given to

If poeple can dress up they should, it's a sign of respect not only to God but also the poeple you attend church with. Not being able to afford nice clothes is a different story, but who really can't find some afordable nice clothes at the thirft shop or the salvation army. You can't just say God excepts you the way you are to get out of getting dressed up on Sunday.

I do "dress up" for church.
I do it because I want my Lord to see that when I stand before his people, I show my respect to Him.
I do it because I want to set a good example - most every time we worship, I stand in front of the congregation. Maybe if I show I have respect for my Lord in His House - it will encourage others to do the same.

(Although I am WELL aware that God accepts us as we are -and thankfully He does or I'd be sunk! - It drives me NUTS-o to see people dress better for school or work than they do for church! Like the fact that God does accept us means we don't have to try as hard or something?!? Oh where is a good "what's your pet peeve" question when you need one...)

Sorry for the mini-rant.

I dress up for two reasons: 1.'cause it is not for God but for people in the church. If I do not dress up then they may think I disrespect God and then they start gossip and tell nasty thing about me... I do not want that that's why I dress up. 2. I just like to look better.

Well, I don't believe in God, so at least I know that when I dress up for church, I'm doing it to make a good impression on the people there.

I usually shave, and put on a clean T shirt and shorts in summer and a clean polo shirt and long slacks in winter.

But except for weddings and funerals I rarely put any fancy clothes on for church and I'm a Pastor.

Jesus was very critical of those who wore their fancy clothes to the synogogue. And more critical of the Pharasees who gave the best seats to those dress in fancy clothes.

30 years ago I used to wear a white shirt, tie and suit all the time but then I started asking, who am I getting dressed up for anyway? God or the people?

The last conference I attended at the First Baptist Church with 1700 other church planters, you could count the neckties with one hand.

The last time I was interviewed on TV, which was the first time I was interviewed on TV in Florida, I didn't wear a suit and tie and felt out of place since everyone else had one on except the guys with their clerical collars, the Catholic and the Anglican.

So next time I get interviewed on TV, I'll wear a suit, white shirt and tie.

In the meantime, I need to remember to dust off my leather shoes since here in Florida I don't wear them that often.

I have thought about this too...isn't there a verse that says, "give of your best to the master"

However, I just wear slacks and a polo shirt...when I was little in the 70's and 80's , we would polish our shoes on Saturday night, and wear a tie to church...times have changed...I now see people that wear shorts, etc... I don't necessarily think it is disrespectful, as much as a sign of our times.

Have you ever seen a picture of people in the 50's shopping or at a baseball game...notice guys used to always wear suits and hats...women would wear dresses even for a ball game...

It is a little sad that there is little occasion to be formal...even when we go to a nice dinner at a nice restaurant...there will be people in shorts and jeans...it is nice to dress up once in a while.

I am not Christian and don't go to Church, but I will answer the question anyway.
I am a Witch. When I get together with my friends of similar Spiritualities to celebrate our Holidays, I do get dressed up. For me it is a sign of respect for the God and Goddess, as well as a way to help me get into the right frame of mind for the Celebration, since the clothes I wear at these times are not clothes that I wear at any other time.
I hope this answers your question.

Mostly I do. I was raised in a pretty strict house when it came to dress code, and I think some of it has stuck. Also as a musician, I tend to be in the line of sight so I want to make sure I'm not a mess.

But if it's over 100 degrees out, I'll be just as likely to be in shorts and a t-shirt as anything else. Clean, decently covered, but heck, God doesn't want me to suffer heat exhaustion.
