This hymn was written when the Church was perceived as a presence called "Christendom;" hence, heaven was called "the Kingdom of God" (not the reign of God, etc.). For the Christian to "march as to war" was figurative language for the Christian's ongoing battle against sin in the world. "Carrying the cross of Christ" before as one 'marched' meant enduring the hardships and suffering that come when one battles against evil. For much more on this hymn, see this website:
