Christianity was the religion of a poor illiterate masses that had no education to defend its falsehoods. The minds capable of seeing though it lunacy was killed off by the religious elite.
Today I have no idea how an educated critical thinking person could not see through the infantile premise of the bible. Unfortunately I do understand why religion now want to indoctrinate the mind of the young to stop the reasoning of education before their young enters the influence of the real world. It is hard to break though thinking that is hard coded into your mind before it is filled with other ideas of reason.

Some knowledge is universal and of an eternal, spiritual nature. Other is limited to time and location. Obviously, things like geography and science were not as well-developed back then, and the people spoke and wrote according to the way they saw the physical world. We now know that they were technically wrong.
However, this does not mean that their insights into the nature of the soul were wrong. The Bible should be evaluated in terms of how well it describes things of a spiritual nature, not things of a scientific nature.

Why is this interesting? What is interesting is that some people refuse the obvious evidence that the Biblical authors assumed an ancient worldview that cannot be taken seriously today. The question for religious believers is how one can interpret the meaning of the message for our worldview. Rudolf Bultmann's writings on this subject are particularly helpful. http://www.religion-online.org/showbook.asp?title=431

...not to mention the various "versions" of the bible. Aramaic to Hebrew. Hebrew to Latin. Latin to Greek. Greek to English. It's just amazing how some people over-look the history and have such a selective interest in certain portions of the bible and biblical texts.
Saw an incredible bumper sticker "I love Jesus too, just not too crazy about his fan club."

Ironic! They also thought the world was made in 7 days, and denied the existence of fossils for many years to confirm it.

Very interesting. People don't realize it was a book created to help you map out a good life for yourself. Example, thou shalt not kill, steal etc. It wasn't meant to be taken literally. It's a book filled with interesting stories.

Because they've been brainwashed into believing bronze-age mythology created by nomadic tribes taking wild guesses at how the world worked.

How do you know they thought the world is flat? Just because Europeans at that time thought it was flat?
I never read the 11th commandment that said, " Thou shalt not get too close to the edge of the Earth lest you fall off."

Good point...and if they were so inspired by God...why didn't they mention the world being round in the Bible?

That's because, as the Word of God, it surpasses the worldly knowledge of the people who wrote it.
They were inspired by God to write it.
God doesn't exist because of the Bible. The Bible exists because of God.
