It depends on your production of cholestrerol....lipitor works against ur body made cholesterol and stops the production whereas zetia which is a combination drug also stops from absorbing your cholesterol from you diet..your doctor would be the best one to decide based on your cholesterol levels.

Lipitor is MUCH more potent than Zetia at lowering a person's LDL. I take Lipitor 20mg and my LDL went from 103 to 62 - nice drop. The reason I take it is because, even tough my LDL is not too hight, my HDL is not high enough. My HDL runs in the high twenties - most MDs want your HDL to be great than 40 (HDL helps clear away the cholesterol deposits or plaque that develops on the inside of your arteries and veins. Lipitor even has a study that shows it can reverse that plaque. Zetia doesn't to that, neither does Vytorin or Crestor. Plus, it's the world's most-prescribed drug, so it must be pretty good.

The deal is this: LDL, or bad cholesterol, is LDL. It doesn't matter how it's absorbed and transported out of your body, as long as it gets out (or lowers to a safe level). Zetia MIGHT lower you LDL from 150 down to 120-130, which isn't that good a drop

I am currently on both. Zetia does not affect liver, but Lipitor is cheaper. If money was no issue, I'd stick to Zetia, which I will soon be going off of as my total, because of diet change, is 119. I'll be on Lipitor for life, because of other disease issues.

I took Lipitor for a while but now I take Vytorin- it lowers cholesterol but also stops your body from producing it. Some peoples bodies produce cholesterol and the combination drugs work better for us- my levels went from 286 down to 134 in just a couple of months- also keep up that diet. Good Luck

Most people I know use the Lipitor. It may be a Doctor's preference, I not sure.
My Doctor gives me "Simvastatin", it similar to Zocor.
Now, you have to understand my Doctor. My Cholesterol is good. It below the high, but, sorta close. So, when I ask, should I change my diet. He not stupid and know people not do what they say. So, he say; "Why"? "We all like Bacon and Ice Cream, take the pill and eat like you do now"!
Vytorin is a combination of Zocor and Zetia.
The main thing, is what works best for you. Your Doctor will discuss this and in time may change what he give you for better results.
