Hi MP! Good for you for looking to learns some healthier habits!

You'll probably hear a lot that the quickest way to lose weight my be to eat minimally or to follow a low/no carb diet. You will see fast results on the scale, but the weight being dropped is primarily water weight.

Eating too little may produce some immediate weight loss, but it can be unhealthly and can actually cause you to GAIN FAT after a period of time.

Low/no carb diets should only be followed for a limited time period.

For safe, effective, long-term results, here are some tips and principles:

Your genetics, types of activity, activity frequency, and eating habits are some of the deciding factors of whether you will lose weight or not. Some quick tips to ensure that you do:

Do your cardio first thing upon waking on an empty stomach.
Eat small meals about every 3 hours. Portion sizes should be such that you are ready to eat again about every 3 hours. This will keep certain hormones balanced throughout the day to aid in fat loss and fat prevention.
Meals should be balanced. Meaning: if your meal/snack calorie breakdown is about 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat, then the rest of your meals should consist of the same breakdown. An EXCEPTION is any meal/snack within a few hours of bedtime. This meal/snack should be strictly protein, no carbs and no fats.
Minimize your sugar and saturated fat intake.
Include Resistance Training 3 times a week. The benefits of resistance training are extremely numerous! Fat loss is included.

I have your problem too. I have a 8 month old daughter and trying to fit in my old jeans...yeah right!
If you want to keep the 20 pounds off don't go for the fast diets. They are very strict and when you go off them you'll get it back soon with the extra bonus of a few pounds. Your body goes into the starvation mode and the first good meals you have after your diet will be stored by your crazed body as reserves for your next starvation. Also you won't believe the cravings after such a restricted regimen.

If you want an idea you might try the "lemon diet" - or the Master cleanse (just google it and you'll get the idea). It takes 10 days and they promise you won;t have the cravings. I succeeded 3 days and I put the whole weight back. I'll try it again soon because I'm leaving for the holidays and I want to look a bit better.Good luck!

Don't worry about losing the weight FAST, worry about doing it safely. Drink plenty of water, eat plenty of fruits & veggies, don't eat late-night snacks before going to bed, and get regular exercise.

If you lose the weight on a crash diet, it will just come back in a few weeks, anyway. You want to lose it at a healthy pace, so the weight can stay off.

I would suggest eating things that are best for your body (chicken breast, rice, vegetables) and drinking 4-5 glasses of water a day to decrease hunger. Also, I would stop drinking sodas and eating junk food. If you do these things along with excercise, you will be amazed how fast you will be back to your normal body weight.

When making cookies, bake half the batch and scoop the remainder into ice-cube trays. When your current sweet tooth kicks in, pop out one and bake it to meet your craving without breaking the calorie bank.

Celebrate Meatless Mondays by building a meal starring beans (another weight-loss aid). You will love this sweet potato as well as black bean burrito.
