The best thing to do is to sympathize with her fear, let her know that it's ok to be afraid of things. She likely just wants for you to UNDERSTAND her fear. Then, if she's comfortable, you can start by buying a silly book about bugs, or a dvd, and slowly help her overcome it by showing her that mommy's not afraid of bugs. I would say that talking about it and not making her feel bad about how she feels is the first step.

take her to a botanic garden or a place with lots of flowers. make sure you hold her, or her hand and bring along a comfort toy/blanket. Show her the pretty bugs to start with like ladybugs and bumble bees. Tell her about how they make the flowers happy and pretty. once she gets comfortable with them, you might even put a ladybug on your hand- or hers if she's ready. Once she understands that some bugs are pretty and nice, explain to her that other bugs make other plants happy. Worms make strawberries happy and rollie pollies are good for the dirt. Teach her that ants clean up the messes outside, and aren't interested in people. Help her to understand that some bugs are ugly and weird, but have a job in life. It's important to help her know that bugs are different, and only want to do their jobs, not harm her. Perhaps she will even be okay with an ant farm- just make sure she understands that they can't get out to hurt her.

I agree that sympathy and introduction to some friendly, easy bugs would help. YOu might want to start though even slower. There are lots and lots of books about bugs for preschoolers. You might try the little miss spider books to begin. They are very cute and low key. Try naming each bug. Wally the worm, Sally spider, Liddy lady bug. then if you see a real bug you can say, is that Liddy? Hi Liddy!
Don't make her touch or hold a bug until she is ready.

I used to be terrified of bugs, snakes, and talking skulls. (Lol!) It would take me forever to fall asleep because I was so afraid of what was at the foot of my bed. My parents would lay a blanket down on my bed then I would lie on top of it. They'd pull the bottom over it over my feet, then wrap the rest of the blanket around my body. My "cocoon" was my shield that would protect my from evil buggies, snakes, and those evil skulls with glowing red eyes. Some might find it to much of a hassle, but I'm over my fears now and I slept much better in my cocoon!

Try to calm her down by having her learn more about bugs. Read her animal books for children and explain to her that bugs are actually useful to humans (e.g. bees make honey and pollinate flowers, some beetles are kept as pets, etc.) Have her examine bugs with a magnifying glass in your backyard. Eventually she will discover that bugs aren't all bad!

aww poor kid. You can show her a movie like A Bugs Life, or something along those lines and tell her that bugs are okay. Just not to touch. lol Show her the good side of bugs. I use to be terrified of spiders and my dad told me they were good becuase they ate the mosquitos that bite me! That helped alot. Good luck with the younging!<3

their imaginations are in overdrive at this age....is she afraid of them being in her room? my girlfriends child had a bedroom monster problem. She had to spray the bedroom with "monster spray" everynight before bed. The doctor gave it to her to keep monsters away. Really the mom bought a spray bottle at wal-mart, filled with water, put a label on, and brought it home....not lying, how do we know monsters are not afraid of water???
