First of all housing now sucks since the Army has stopped running it, We live on Fort Drum and it is now privatized. We get our BAH in our check and they tax it then take the BAH back out. We live in a 2 bedroom upstairs apartment and pay 1174 a month. To the person who gets "free cable and phone line" what post do you live on??? We pay for phone, cable, internet and soon we will also be paying electric and gas.

Not only is it based on rank, the cost of housing varies by city. I was in San Diego with a 4-bedroom from 2003-2005, and the premiums then were about $1100. They would be around maybe $1400-1500 now.
You have to ask the housing office of the town you need to know.

Base housing regardless of size is a total rip off now. It is all privately owned and run by contracting companies and your entire housing allowance is the cost of the base housing. So if you get $1400 a month for a housing allowance, your rent amount for base housing is $1400 and now you also get to pay utilities on top of that. Live out in town and spend your money wisely.

Soldier's receive a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) based on their rank. On the bases that have privatized housing, BAH is given to the soldier, then taken away in full on the same paycheck. On bases that do NOT have privatized housing, BAH is never given to the soldier. So, technically, the housing is free... but, the BAH entitlement counts as income for everything except taxes.
It doesn't matter if you have a 3-BR, 4-BR... 6-BR (my neighbors)... the "cost" of housing is the dollar amount of your BAH based on rank.
We live in a 40 year old 3-BR townhouse, and based on my husband's rank, we pay $900+ a month for rent. We don't pay water, gas and electric. BUT, they are proposing that we will begin paying utilities in the near future. $900+ utilities is an awful lot to pay for pretty shoddy housing.
And, to 24-Dupont Watcher... single soldiers live in the barracks... that's why they are not entitled to a housing allowance.

Okay, first of all to live on post, it costs nothing, they will accommodate to your needs. If you do not need a 4 bedroom you will not get a four bedroom. Your husband would no longer get BAH. Thats how that works

uhm, Free!!! Government gives you money to live out in town or military housing so its basically free. Unlike single people who draws no BAH or should I say full BAH.
To DD who said I was wrong; A single military member E-5 and above can draw "Single BAH without dependants". You can thumb me down all you want but my Fiance (civilian GS) works at admin screens and approves BAH requests. If you need actual DOD intructions on BAH entitlements, feel free to respond. Untill then, I hope this link answers your myth that single soldiers are stuck in barracks.
One more thing, how many 30 plus yr old army soldiers you know live in the barracks still? Im just curious. Your typical 30yr old is approximatly and E-5 or above. Oh wait, is it possible that a man serves his country for 24 years and retires out of the barracks? Your an army vet? 17years 7 months counting here with plenty of experiance authorizing my suboordinates to draw BAH to move out in town. My BAH is $2,553 and one thing your right on is that I dont see any of it out here in Hawaii. Im PPVed

It is set to cost exactly what your BAH is, so it is based on rank. If you are in post housing they will stop your BAH. If you are on a post that has privatized the housing then you will receive your BAH but you will have to set up an allotment to the contractor.

All your Basic Allowance for Quarters(BAQ), but only if your family is large enough to qualify for those quarters.
If the housing is listed as substandard they give you some of your BAQ and an "I'm Sorry"
