Because it's there. Some people were born with that argue mental mind set, and religion just happens to work out for most people. Only because most people are very set on what they believe. So, arguing with what they believe, and what another person believes gets them nowhere but a good argument. :]

Religion is one of the biggest things in life. There are so many different types also. Such as Catholic, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islamic, etc. The main reason why religion keeps arguing is that they believe their own religion is the best and the others are just make believes or wrongful. One of the only religions I've known to be peaceful altogether is Buddhism. One of the principles of Buddhism is to respect other people's religion on matter what they are.

People argue things about which they feel passionate. Think about this: if someone challenged your love for a family member (parent, child, sibling, etc.), you would argue that until you were blue in the face. If someone said to me, "you do not love your daughter," I would feel a tremendous need to argue with them until I prove to them that I do. By challenging someone's religious beliefs and the existence of their monotheistic leader, you are challenging their love and devotion to them. The stronger the belief and dedication, the stronger the argument.

Because they believe in what they argue about and they don't appreciate when people bash their beliefs. (As most atheists bash Christians you will find many Christians defending their beliefs).
One of the most ironic things, however, is that atheists spend so much time mocking Christians- and later they claim that WE (Christians) shove our beliefs down their throats.

Manifesting perfection is the easiest and most manageable way of uncovering the perfection within you. Why I do it is not as important as how I do it. And how I learn to accept it. Why I do it is simple, it is because I wish to be happy.
