I think it is the drugs with the sulfonamide ring. I have been having hives off/on for over 2 years. I have tried almost every allergy meds out there but I was getting worse. the doc had me stop all meds so I can be tested. When i stopped my blood pressure meds the hives got alot better. it has a water pill in it. that is why I think it may be the type of drugs with the sulfonamide ring. I already know I had problems with the antibiotics but was told the other type of sulfa was different and I should not have any proplems. I think I maybe one of those people who can not take any type of sulfa/sulfur at all.

It is quite easy to determine if you are allergic to sulfa based drugs by either skin or blood testing. Bear in mind that being allergic to a drug implies the potential for a life-threatening reaction which is different than simply having a side effect to a drug. Side effects are unpleasant but they seldom cause harm. Since true drug allergies are potentially life-threatening it is important to know for certain and testing is strongly recommended. Such testing should be available in any primary care physician's office without the need for referral to a specialist. If you are allergic to sulfa based drugs you should be aware of the fact that many drugs contain the 'sulfonamide' chemical ring structure - not just antibiotics. If you are allergic to sulfa based drugs you must not take certain diabetic drugs and most 'fluid' or 'water' pills also know as diuretics, saluretics, and natriuretics. Finally some anti-inflammatory drugs such as celecoxib/Celebrex contain the sulfonamide ring and would be prohibited. It is very important that you are aware that other drugs than antibiotics are sulfonamides are doctors often forget or we may simply make a mistake. The pharmacist should catch the error but they are human and make mistakes as well. I wish you the best of health and may God bless.

It is a very common allergy. You can get a skin or blood test to find out if you definitely have the allergy. If you are allergic to it, the you have to stay away from all sulfa-based drugs, like Bactrim. The good news is that there are lots of alternative medications that can take the place of these drugs, so it's not hard to avoid them. All sulfa-based drugs are only available by prescription, so you don't have to worry about getting something over the counter that has sulfa in it.

Talk to your doctor about this and he can tell you if the symptoms are an allergy or not. I am deathly allergic to sulfa drugs and make sure that is always on my chart whenever I see a doc. Talk to your doc though and he can help you determine if you have a true allegy or not.

Ask your pharmacist.....and btw I am allergic as well, when I was young I got staff infection from a cut, sulfa was the cure, but since I could not take it......the doctor told me to soak the cut in Tide, make a paste with the powder and put directly on the infection....it works!
