What does the # 45 or #50 mean when buying a fishing line?

It tells how much weight the line can withstand in pounds. Like #45 word hold 45 pounds. It dos not however tell how big of a fish it can hold. I've heard of 60+ pound Flathead being hooked with line less than 10 pounds in strength and still been reeled in.

#45 and #50 is the line's test weight. That line was tested and passed by holding 45 or 50 pounds of weight without breaking. You do not need 45 pound test to land a 45 pound fish. You need the right equipment, but more importantly you need skill and patience. Good luck to ya.

I don't know whata Weasel is talking about but, 50# test line is enough to pull your car.
We fish Salmon, some reach about forty and fifty pounds and break rods, I don't think we have line that's over 30# and, by the way, every year I break one rod. We usually fish with about eight rods in the water.
Anything else we use ten pounds or about twenty pounds.
