My big "food crime" as a child involved not vegetables but fish. Like many kids, I wasn't fond of it. So bit by bit I slipped it into the paper napkin in my lap when my parents weren't looking. I couldn't get the napkin into the garbage because it was under the sink and my mom was doing dishes. So I took it into my room and stashed it in the toy chest in my closet. I meant to move it into the garbage later, but I forgot all about it. A few days later, when my mom asked "What is that awful smell in your room?", I was as mystified as she was. I had hidden it so well that it took a day or two to find it. Ugh. My mom was still telling the story to embarrass me 20 years later, and I can't really blame her.

I was never that clever... I tried to just spread them around my plate, trying to make the big pile turn into a few here and there around my plate. Didn't always work! Then I'd try to hide them under my napkin...didn't work either. My dog wouldn't eat them, so that was out of the question. I still hate lima beans. =)

I was raised up on a small farm, and we liked most of the veggies. If there was one or two we didn't like, then mom would go outside and cut a switch off a small bush. Then she would lay the switch on the table, and leave it.
We knew its purpose, and we ate our veggies, even if we didn't like them. Yes, there were times when we felt the switch...... but child abuse laws didn't apply way back then. Parents could whip as much as they wanted.

There's no way to hide them, our parents were right there.
On the upside, the meals were set out family style and our parents started our plates a small amount and we could take more if we wanted. It was easy to eat just a couple bites.

Our veggies were fresh from the garden. None of that awful canned stuff or frozen. So I learned to love fresh veggies at an early age. Well, okay, cauliflower has no redeeming quality whatsoever: it's even an unappetizing color.

I have to say my mom was pretty good about it. She would only make the vegtables we liked. alot of corn and beans. I always tried to hide the peas when they showed up tho but i love them now.

I had the only vegetarian dog in the neighborhood. He was healthy, and lived until he was 18 years old.

No - but what ever we didn't eat off of our plate we got for the next meal.............. but we too were clever.... grandma lived just a block from us and we would go there and eat.... didn't care how many times we got what we didn't eat...... Isn't that what grandparents are for.......... we had wonderful grandparents.

No! Mom didn't care for veggies. She only gave them to us on Sundays, so they were a treat.
