When I work out, my shoulder and elbow joints make popping and cracking sounds. It does not hurt or anything, I'm just worried that it might cause problems down the road.

If there is a lot of popping, but no pain, it is a sign that you are not stretching properly before lifting. If there is pain with the popping, you have an arthritic joint and need to stop.

You are not likely to cause serious damage if there is no pain, but you can definitely cause problems with your range of motion and alignment of the limbs that are popping. Late in life, these things can cause all sorts of aches and pains, and especially problems with your back. Try to stretch the joints that are popping.

From the medical research I've read and my own personal experience with this, popping any of your joints (whether in your back, neck or fingers - knuckle cracking included) doesn't seem to be directly related to arthritis or other problems. Next time you have a checkup, ask your doctor because there might be something about you (family history of arthritis, whatever) that might make it advisable NOT to do such rigorous weight training, since as with ANY medical advice given on this Answers site, you need to realize that it's completely dependent on what YOUR personal medical history is.

Hello, I have the same problem, but with my knees, and I dont lift weights but when I am walking and bending my knees, they do that all the time, I just wen to a Arthritis doctor and I told her about my knees and she looked at them and all. She said I definately have knee cap problems. Although I dont know if yours is the same things or not, you may want to ask your doctor about it. Mine doesnt hurt either, but my doctor said that my knees should not be doing that. I am only 25 yrs old and I was shocked to find out I am having problems with them so early. This probably didnt help you and I am sorry if it didnt. Good luck with it :-)

No, it is not. Either your form is wrong or you have some degeneration of the tissue that pads your joints.

You might need a new hip replacement....just kidding :). It's completely normal....I wouldn't worry too much about it.
