Start with good bread sliced at least an inch wide. Make your batter with equal parts egg and milk, add some vanilla extract and cinnamon. I don't like my french toast too mushy so I don't "soak" the bread but just dip it on both sides. Cook in a skillet with real butter til golden and crunchy. You may have to add more cinnamon as you go as you will see that it kind of stays on top of the batter. Happy cooking!

THE ABSOLUTE BEST french toast I ever had was with stale french bread. I know it doesn't sound good, but it was awesome. I think because the bread was a bit dry, it soaked up more of the egg and spices and when it was done, it wasn't mushy at all. It was just regular french bread sliced about an inch thick. You let it sit out uncovered for a day or two and then use it. Then, you find a good recipe using egg, a little bit of milk, and spices of your choice, and dip the bread in it and cook it on a warm non-stick skillet. Afterwards, you can sprinkle a little bit of powdered sugar on it, and use syrup or anything else you want to it and enjoy!

For 3-4 slices:

1 egg, a splash of milk, a little sugar, few drops of vanilla, mixed in a shallow bowl. Add bread one slice at a time, soak all the way through, and transfer to a hot skillet. You can melt a little butter in the pan first, if you want the toast to be nicley browned (and also help keep it from sticking). Flip once, to cook both sides. Serve with a pat of butter, warm syrup or jam, sauteed apples, or anything else that sounds good. Berries & whipped cream are popular at our house.

You can also find recipes online for baked french toast; these are great if you are cooking for a lot of people and don't want to spend your whole morning standing at the stove. Some of them can even be started the night before.

Enjoy!

Mix up egg and a little milk or cream in a bowl as if you were going to make scrambled eggs.

Heat a skillet over medium to low heat, and melt a small amount of butter in it.

Put the bread in the bowl and get both sides "egged up" (leave each side for about a second, but don't over do it)

Place in the skillet and cook each side until the edges of the toast surface are brown.

Make scrambled eggs with the leftover egg & milk mix.
Heat your maple syrup in the microwave and enjoy!

You will need: sliced bread, eggs, milk (how much egg and milk depends on how many you are making...for 3-4 pieces, I use one egg and about a half a cup of milk), nutmeg (just a little tiny bit), cinnamon (just a pinch), powered sugar...
in a pan, melt butter (about a "pat" per piece of toast) and coat bottom of pan..make sure pan is already hot before cooking the toast
mix together spices and milk and egg...whip with fork or whisk until a little frothy...
Dip bread slices in mixture (do not dip and let sit..dip the bread just before you put it in the pan..otherwise it will be too soggy) and put in pan..brown on each side (only takes a minute or two)..
Sprinkle finished toast with powered sugar...serve with syrup on the side...
Banana's or berries make a nice accompaniment...

In a dish- beat 2 eggs, a Tbsp. of milk, cinnamon (a pinch), and 1/2 tsp. (or smidge) of vanilla. Set aside.
Now get bread- you can use any that you choose but Texas Toast (the thick slices like restaurant bread) taste the best!...set aside.
Put about 1/4 c of veg. oil (cover the bottom) of a frying pan.
Heat this oil on med. when hot...
Dip slice of bread in batter mix and lay in pan- about 2-3 min. per side....pull out and butter, syrup and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Other suggestions of toppings from my kids...
whip cream and sprinkles, blueberries,raspberries,cherries,strawberries,fruit medley,pb&j, chocolate chips,butterscotch chips,etc.

Can you tell our family loves french toast?

A very easy recipe- use store-bought eggnog.Soak a sturdy bread in this-use a egg bread like a challah. Soak the bread for about 10 minutes or till it's soaked thru. Make sure to turn the bread over halfway thru. Also, do this in a shallow pan or dish. It would be nice to add a little cinnamon to the mix. You are going to have a medium-hot frying pan that you've added a little butter to. Use a wide spatula to turn the toast.Brown on one side, then turn over to brown the other side.Enjoy!

Pain Perdu in French!Which means "lost bread" in french.
Just whip up one egg a bit, add a spoonful of sugar, a dash of milk and dip a slice or two of good bread (your french toast will be only as good as your primary ingredients!)Coat both sides. This only takes a few seconds each side!If youve used a bread that is too delicate, it will fall into pieces! Put a bit of butter Into a medium hot frying pan, let that melt and carefully slip in your eggy bread slices. Cook them on each side till golden brown, sprinkle cinnamon on top or a bit of powdered suger as they do in France or a real maple syrup as they do in US and Canada and you are in business! I like to use a thick sliced sourdough. If I'm trying to impress someone,I add a touch of orange flower water and one or two passes of grated lemon rind to the egg, milk, sugar, cinnamon mix as well! Delicious! Enjoy!
