"Video DVD Maker" and "Sothink Movie DVD Maker" are two free applications you can use to convert video files to DVD. Give those a try.

Try http://www.winavi.com there is a trial period of 30 days, after that its about 18 quid to buy. The trial version leaves a watermark but at least you can try it for yourself,
Im sure there are many free versions, just Google it.

get the easy to use software called "Nero 7"
thats all you need but its best to have other programs like DIVX and XVID which are codecs (they help support the program)
