My dog just blew out his Carnial Cruciate ligament and the vet is reccomending TPLO or TTA surgery. THis is a very costly surgery and wanted to see if there are any alternatives.

If the cruciate is completely gone then surgery is the only option. Anti-inflammatory treatment is the cheapest alternative, but only really suitable for ligaments that are damaged but still intact.

Ask your vet about a general cruciate repair op. TPLOs (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy) are the best type of repair, the dog is usually back to walking much quicker although it is of course more complex and therefore expensive. TPLOs also remain the best form of correction in large breed dogs - what breed is your dog?

Your vet is offering you the best option (which is why it's expensive) but ask what the alternatives are. It's fairly likely they could do the cheaper op, but you would be at a higher risk of experiencing complications, especially if your dog is big.

I just found this article which explains the ops brilliantly:

Nope,I don't have bad knees & would NOT do any surgery if I did.
