No, you need a male and female rat. If you bought a female and she had babies several weeks later, she was pregnant when you got her. This is VERY common for pet store rats.

It still takes a male rat and a female rat to produce more rats.

If you have a female rat that you recently bought from a pet store (with the past month) and she had babies, she was pregnant when you got her.
If you've had her for MORE than a month and she had babies -- and there are NO male rats in the house -- then it's possible that a wild rat got in and mated with her. They can, believe it or not, 'do it' right through the cage bars!
