How Islam has kept the West out of the 'Dark Ages'

We in the West know what the Ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Babylonians have done for us in terms of scientific discovery. Most of us have at least heard of Socrates, Ptolemy, Galen and Pythagoras and of their contributions to philosophy, astronomy, physics and mathematics. But how many of us have heard of Al-Kindi, Ibn Sina, Al-Razi, Ibn Al-Shatir, Ibn Al-Haytham or Al-Tusi?
They are all Muslim scientists who made equally great contributions to science, between the 7th and 15th centuries – during the era known as the Dark Ages in the west.

It's time to recognize our debt to those Islamic scientists of the past, who forged ahead while Europe stagnated.

What did Islam do for science?

Some great Islamic scientists:
•Ibn Sina, philosopher and physician
Produced a standard medical text in the 10th century that was still in use in the 17th century.

•Al-Tusi, astronomer
His mathematical models were essential to the work of Copernicus in proving that Earth travelled around the Sun.

•Abu Jafar Muhammad, mathematician
Gave us algebra and algorithms that were central to the development of modern computing that we still use today.

•Ibn al-Haytham
His work on vision and light helped Newton formulate his theories on optics.

Islamic science in a nutshell:
•When Western Europe was at its lowest intellectual peak, from the 5th to the 15th centuries, Islamic civilisation was rising rapidly. A thirst for knowledge, including science, was encouraged by the religious leaders of early Islam.

•The works of the ancients, including Aristotle, Socrates, Ptolemy, Galen, Pythagoras and Euclid were collected, safeguarded and translated into Arabic.

•The chemical properties of alkalis and acids were discovered by Islamic scientists.

•The process of distillation was formulated and used to produce petrol from crude oil.

•Islamic scientists contributed to algebra, algorithms, trigonometry, geometry, chemistry, cosmology, astronomy, medicine and optics.

•Islamic scholars developed the concepts of modern hospitals, universities, observatories and civil systems.

•The concept of zero reached medieval Europe through the Arab nations who had probably learned of it from ancient Hindu and Chinese cultures. Prior to this Europe struggled with a system of Roman numerals, in which large numbers would consist of huge strings of letters. Once zero was incorporated, numbers took on the more manageable decimal system that we use today.

The reawakening of the West:
Ironically, as Islamic scientific invention started to decline, Western science was beginning to wake up.
Western scholars began translating the treasury of Islamic science into Latin. They had rediscovered their thirst for learning and were well on their way to the Renaissance – the re-discovery and assimilation of the knowledge and philosophy of the ancients. It is interesting and just a bit scary to think that if it weren't for the foresight and creativity of Islamic scientists, we might just be arriving at that point today. Having caught up on the 500 years we've borrowed from Islam, we'd be just heading for the Renaissance now. The Western world has a lot to thank Islamic scientists for.

Probably. There seems to be this unbreakable connection between status of women in a society and the overall standard of living for everyone involved. I don't know what causes what. Maybe having a well educated population that has the time to stop and think naturally realizes it can't treat half its population as inferior. Or maybe treating half your population as non-humans just has direct consequences, you're preventing half your population from making any kind of contribution to society. I'm leaning to the second one, and Islam is holding back millions of people from having a better life. On the other hand, it may just be the excuse tribal societies are using to hold back millions of people from having a better life.

Hi sorry before I was here I did not read all of your comments about my religion, but I know where the direction of your conversation. You need to remember that ISLAM IS NOT LIKE THAT YOU IMAGINE Islam is a religion of peace loving religion but only because a handful of people who misuse the name of your ISLAM arbitrarily nickname that Islam is RELIGIOUS TERRORISM
Remember that at the end of the day will be shown man's right and what's wrong, and Islam is the truest religion. So do not ever blaspheme the Islamic religion because we also do not blaspheme your religion we respect you,

Everyones got the right to their own beliefs, I know that Muslims like you have been getting a lot of Descimination for these past few years but, can you blame the haters? I think not all muslims are Bad, I just don't understand why some muslims think that Violence is the answer to everything in this world, I mean do they Honestly think that Alah the Islamic God, your God is happy with all of the evil things that those evil Muslims have been doing, that your people have been doing? Most muslim Terrorist say that war (JIHAD) is the solution to all kinds of problems and I just don't understand how easy it is for them to use Alahs name to justify everything bad that they've been doing, it's so disrespectful and I hope they all go to hell because of that, I hope that your God punishes them for causing pain and suffering to those innocent people out there, their pitiful shadow is cloaked in darkness, they've cause a lot of pain and suffering, their hollow souls drowns in the pool of their own sins, I hope that your God shows them, what death is.

I think a lot of you have missed the point. The asker is not criticising muslims - he is being ironic!! All of todays ills are being blamed on muslims from a majority who are totally ignorant of what Islam is all about. Perhaps if we all learnt about each other we could be informed enough to unite against terrorists of all religions/cultures.
We are in more danger from media hype and powerful leaders of so-called civilised countries than we are from the majority of muslim people.
Wake up and stop believing the propoganda!

The Creator of heaven and earth decreed that through Abraham, ALL nations of the earth will be blessed. That includes the nations that arose through his son born to Hagar - Ishmael - now predominantly Islamic nations. Could I ask, in turn, whether Muslims think the world would be better without Judaism?

Most people do not hate Islam or Muslims. It's the radicalism they hate. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of intolerance in all religions because most people will not educate themselves as to the basic precepts of the world's great faiths.

Of course the world would not be better off without Islam. The weapons trade would find it much harder to make money. The manufacturers of Semtex would almost go broke and how would half the worlds drug users live without the copious supplies of Opium from the Afghan poppy fields.
Thousands of soldiers would be out of a job, roads in the middle east would once again be crammed with carbon emitting cars with the danger of road-side bombs removed, etc, etc, etc

Maybe. Would the world be better without guns? How about drugs? As a Christian, I hold no ill will toward Muslims. I just wish some of them held no ill will toward me.

The world would be a lot better if there was no Muslim EXTREMISTS and TERRORISTS. Peaceful practitioners of the Muslim faith are not the problem. That said, I wish Muslims would do more to rid their religion of the hate and extremism that currently infects it.
