Take the train to NYC and be sure to go to the Museum of Natural History - it is VERY child friendly and there is so much to see for a boy/girl and adults!! It is right by Central Park, so when you are finished go for some ice cream in the park. Have fun and good luck!

Definitely train. You should definitely go to Toys 'R' Us in Town Square and have a picnic at Central Park. Finish off the day with a Broadway show. She's probably goin to prefer one based on a Disney movie (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, etc.)

Museums, there are lots of children's museums, also Central park is nice this time of year, Coney Island Aquarium is great too if you are willing to travel to Brooklyn, and don't worry about what other people say, it's safe taking the subway

The train is really the best way to go, especially if you're only there for one day. It's a much shorter ride than by bus.

I really, really recommend a visit to the American Girl Place. It's expensive, but something she'll never, ever forget: http://www.americangirlplace.com/agp_ny_splash.php
