Look in Nero for the option to create a video DVD. That will step you through the process to convert the avi file to a vob file (the format your home DVD player needs). Nero will convert and burn the movie for you at the same time. Be warned that converting a 2 hour movie takes a minimum of 2 hours - often longer.

Well the truth is a bit more complicated. What you have been doing is just trying to copy the contents of a CD to a DVD, which isn't going to work. DVD players need certain files and instructions so that they know where your movie files are and how to play / present them. What you need is a way to take the .avi file and make a DVD from it.
One way I found on the net was using a program called Avi2DVD. It's freeware and I think it will do the trick so I'll link to a complete walkthrough of how to use the software below. One warning, I have not used this software myself so I can't attest to whether all the utilities included in it are completely legal so make sure to check on that before you use it.
Another way that may work for you, is to try to burn the .avi onto DVD but make sure to pick a video DVD format. If you just burn it to the DVD you are essential just making a DVD data disc, like one would use to install software. The DVD has to have menu's and formating that the DVD player can understand and I believe Nero can provide all that.

If you have an *.AVI file and Nero 6, use NeroVision Express 3 to create your DVD.
In NeroVision Express3
1- Add video files
2- Click "Next" button to create DVD Menu
3- Click "Edit Menu"
4- Change layout, background, buttons, font, header/footer text, shadow, automatization, and interaction colors as needed.
5- Click "Next" to continue to "Select Menu" window.
6- Click "Next" to watch how menu will play.
7- Click "Next" to go to burn DVD.
8- Make sure DVD drive is listed in the "burn to device" window, if not change in the parameter section in the same windows on the top right.
9- Click "Burn" to transfer to DVD.
It will take a while depending on the size. This is only for Nero users. Other tools are available. Check videohelp.com for some manuals and howto's

An ISO is nothing but a disk image. It's a copy of a disk. If you put an AVI into an ISO, you're just going to end up with a disk that has nothing but an AVI on it. What you need is to encode it for DVD playback. I'm not sure what application are available to the PC for this, but for Mac, we use iDVD. Simply putting an AVI on a disk will not make a playable DVD.
The first answer was wrong, ISOs can be DVD's as well.

Try InfraRecorder. It is a free open source utility for burning CDs and DVDs. I have used it and had better results than with Roxio. The link is below. Good luck.
