This time of year a variety of birds might chase your cat.
This is nesting season, and if you cat wandered a bit too close to a nest, the parents will divebomb and the cat until it leaves. I've seen small little starlings attack crows, and even ravens! A few days ago I saw a lone crow trying to defend her nest against a large sea gull. She had divebombed the gull many times all the while cawing as loud as she could. A few minutes later another crow appeared, but the damage was done and the gull had destroyed the nest and had his dinner. Such a sad thing to see.
I would recommend getting your cat a bell or some other noisemaker that clips onto its collar. This will protect any birds it tries to stalk and will also help YOU when it decides to sneak up silently behind you in the house while you are doing the dishes! (Some cats have figured out a way to walk so that the bells don't jingle. So this might not work that well with your cat.)
Good luck.

Yeah, like the others said, probably a mama bird protecting her nest. If you want a specific type of bird, though, it might have been a Blue Jay. They're kind of the jerks of the bird world.

Almost any bird with eggs in the nest or baby birds to protect will do this. Almost any animal would run from an angry dive bombing bird.

Basicly a bird that is larger then your cat. A large bird can swoop down and take you cat away. Also a mom bird.

Blue Jays are very angry birds. They seem to have no fear. Our cat was dive bombed by a blue jay. Our cat wasn't doing anything, just laying out in the grass. You could hear the blue jay squaking, and all of the side, he swooped down at our cat. Kinda Funny actually.

There used to be Blue Jays on my back yard that would dive-bomb my 90 pound golden retriever whenever I would let her out!
