I am not going to speak for anyone but myself and I am not going to look at any of the other answers, cause I am sure you got some doozies (I hope that is how you spell the D word)but I had a hard time getting through algebra in high school and in college I had to study countless hours to get through anatomy, neuroanatomy, pharmocology, so basically I will say this, without study I could not simply explain why this muscle does this or which nerves inervate which muscles.
I simply beieve in GOD based on my opinion, much study and experience, because the one thing that I KNOW is that man made science is ill equipt to confirm one way or the other the existance of the infinite.

I have always gone along with the statement by H.L.Mencken:
"No article of faith is proof against the disintegrating effects of increasing information; one might almost describe the acquirement of knowledge as a process of disillusion."
[The American Credo: A Contribution toward the Interpretation of the National Mind, 1920, p.10]
I think the more intelligent and educated a person is, the more likely they are to question dogma.
Very amused by stakekawa's statement that people like her have faith INSTEAD OF intelligence.

It works both ways. A religious person is still a fool if he/she believes in the religion blindly... and a non-religious person is still a fool for not making an effort to study/find out about the Truth.
I don't need to cite sources for this, its just common sense...

Awesome! Eldad answers your question exactly like you wanted to: short, friendly and with citing a research study.
He already has his first thumbs down.
This section is so funny!

intelligence has nothing to do with having faith. I am not saying that there are no intelligent believers- but I am saying that God uses ordinary men for His glory. Faith is what pleases the Lord- not degrees after the person's name. Wisdom is more important to God than being "intelligent". Wisdom is what you do with the intelligence and knowledge you have been given.

Actually, religious extremists do tend to be higher than average when it comes to IQ. In fact it's this ability that lets them rationalize away anything in reality that contradicts their pre-set belief. To quote author Michael Shermer: heavily religious people are smart people who came to believe in something for dumb reasons.

The very fact that you ask this question shows that you are on the short end of the stick. Would you like me to explain this to you, in case you are not intelligent enough to understand?

Well, there is no research needed to know that the USA is the most advanced nation in the world and is 90 to 95% religious.
