There is definitely a bit of a generalization here, but to try and answer your question, I think this perception stems from the fact that religion, at its core, is based on belief and faith and includes many components that can not be explained using accepted scientific methods and must be accepted on faith alone. Some people are comfortable with this, other are not and that creates the tension you are asking about.

I would not say christians are uneducated, but I would venture to say that many have not looked for answers beyond the bible or their pastors. Perhaps that is what they are referring to. Now I know several christians who have done just that and still believe, but they are in the minority by far. I know of way too many christians who barely know the bible let alone what truth there is outside of it.

I am an atheist, and I do not think that you are uneducated. I think that what you believe in is ridiculous, but that does not make you stupid!

Unlike religious drones, we use evidence. Do you know what evidence is? Look it up in the dictionary. Once you understand the word, re-examine your question. It will become quite obvious.

Do you think perhaps it is the lack of confidence that made you think the atheist so?
