I was just wondering what goes on for a ship's commissioning ceremony. My son is so excited to go and see his dads ship and would like to tell him what will go on. Thanks

Usually there are some speeches and Military band music and then the ceremony. In the ceremony they bring in the sailors that will take the ship out. They all come to the stage to get their orders. Then they are given the command board the ship. They all run in two lines onto the ship. It is fun to watch as the sailors take their position. It is a very patriotic event. He will like it.

Dress for conditions.. best guess is you will be on the pier under no cover, so fo it is windy or raining, come prepared. also, wear low heels(preferably none) as chances are that friends and family will be invited on board afterwards to take a tour, and those P ways and ladderwells are a pain in the boohind to negotiate in heels.

if your child is very young, he will get bored out of his skull really fast.. there will be lots of speechifying and pomp and curcumstance, so make sure he has something to occupy him. most likely will be a firing salute and the raising of the Ensign The CO will officially take charge, the ship will be blessed, and there will be a band. most crewmenmmbers will start off on the pier and will walk aboard her when she is Commissioned. That can a few minutes, depending onthe ship. Afterwards, merrymaking fo a sort.. possibly as smiple as finger foods undera canopy on the pier to a full on reception elsewhere.

Mightbe somebody selling hats and T shirts too.

I attended the commissioning of the USS Rhode Island and as I recall it was HOT! Very hot. Lots of speeches and a presentation of sorts. By that, I mean marching and the color guards. A party and dinner afterward.

Civilians will be dressed in suits and dresses. Sailors and Marines will be in dress uniforms. Many speeches. Your son should be excited, it will be a memorable day.
